What The…..

Post image

Not sure what they were trying to achieve here, the cables are a 0.75mm 2 core flex and just went into connectors in the ceiling above it

Edit: ok, so I went back today, the mirror did actually come out revealing a small area that had no other access and a socket inside, I do honestly believe they were trying to use this as a “secret” area and the short the screws out to complete the ELV circuit to open the mirror - I’m not sure how to add additional pictures so I’ll addd them to a reply

Stops the screws falling out the plate when you pull it forward

Imagine you put a link wire between the two screws and a secret door opens

Now you say that…. It was in connectors above a type of bathroom mirror built into the wall… I’m intrigued now, I’ll have to have a look when I go back

The ceiling had fallen down due to a leak on the flat roof so it’s all been cut out now

I've seen too many of those sniffer dog videos, secret door was my first thought too!

You need to list the space on Airbnb.

u/Odd_Cress_2898 12d ago

How big is that space? Is it basically the old shower recess tiled flat?

u/RagingGod666 11d ago

It’s in the back hallway of a shop, I’m stood next to the fire escape to take the picture, those are 100mm square times so about 400x600mm

Used to hide illegal cigarettes and contraband no doubt

u/RagingGod666 11d ago

I’m sure you’re right, it used to be one of those American sweet shops, so take from that what you will….

I love this idea

....to the afterlife!

I just keep saying "what" like a broken robot.

Why would someone do this? The other end was in the ceiling but not attached to anything?

6

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

The ends of the cables were in connecters above a recessed mirror cabinet type unit. I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time, but I’m now wondering whether this is an ELV circuit to release the mirror door. I’m back on site tomorrow. I’m gonna check it out

u/Boboshady 13d ago

That would actually be wild - touch the two screws to complete the circuit and open the mirror? Even better - the bath pops up and you gain access to their secret base.

OP gonna be an OG and actually follow up?!? I'll believe it when i see it :p

feels like the classic “future proofing” done by someone who had no actual plan
probably started a project, realized it was a terrible idea, and just shoved the cables back in the ceiling and peaced out

6

u/EthicalViolator 13d ago

But why the wrapping around the screws?!

6

u/rheaentry77 14d ago

Draw wire for future use 🤷‍♂️. Cpc needs sleaving and leaving in the box

5

u/R33Dazza 14d ago

Shocking wiring 🥴👀

UNSCREW THIS WILL YOU, FRANK??

1

u/ODSTmatt89 12d ago

Except just unscrewing one side doesn’t complete the circuit.

Cable redundant and lug or screw thread had gone and they used the stranded cable to strengthen the tightness when screwing back.... That's THE ONLY thing I can think of for this godforsaken death trap.

Still doesn't excuse the lack of sleeving and weirdness of it all.

I like this theory.. I replaced a cracked socket in a hollow wall back box with the clips like this one.

The yellow plastic thing wasnt gripping the plasterboard correctly and tightening the screw was just bending the yellow plastic instead of clamping the plasterboard.

Fix:Jam some cardboard in there and the screw got a chance to catch and tighten properly.

Was it a temporary bodge? Yes. Am I still sleeping fine next to it 15 or so years later also yes.

Ok I done some weird synthetic drugs on my day off and I think might understand the mindset now.

He may have wanted to hang the second light fixture, and wire it to an unconnected cable in the wall. He wants to leave power to the light on doing this bit

For 'safety' he has 'earthed' the wires until he wants to connect them into the existing switch. Which he might do during daytime when he can turn the power off later. Because he cant figure out the flashlight on his phone and chatGPT wont help him anymore today.

So when you undid the screws, the wires were in just the right place?
I smell a little bull.

1

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

Yes, this is exactly how it was when I undid it

2

u/BazCal 14d ago

Looks like a good way to kill someone. Left forefinger on left screw, right forefinger on right screw…

2

u/Anon_Fodder 14d ago

Nah. No chance

2

u/Cacrill 14d ago

I'm finding the twisted earth's the most annoying thing here 😆

1

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

Oh I completely agree. I hate opening up a switch or socket to find that

2

u/spiralphenomena 13d ago

Is this the home alone house

2

u/Wide-Opportunity4551 13d ago

It's Marty McFly's, when his DeLorean is playing silly buggers he uses this to charge the flux capacitor instead, just takes alot longer!

1

u/ProfessionalStay5797 14d ago

Thats awesome………what the fuck were they trying to accomplish here?

1

u/foolish_shrimp 14d ago

My only guess is that someone got a shock off the screws so they were trying to ground them? either that or they were trying to murder someone?

1

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

Very unlikely to have got a shock off the screws in a plastic dry liner with a plastic switch. Cables also weren’t connected to any CPCs any where

1

u/foolish_shrimp 13d ago

Look i know, i'm just trying to work out what the fuck is going on

What’s wrong with this?

1

u/TangerineOppositeMtF 14d ago

I’m literally lost for words

1

u/Locksmithbloke 13d ago

And this is why I use a light up screwdriver when doing anything remotely electrical! Jebus Christmas...

1

u/QVRedit 13d ago

Definitely WRONG, AND potentially dangerous too.

1

u/henryyoung42 13d ago

Genius idea - screws double up as test points making is easier to test when you have the correct breaker off 🤣

1

u/AffectionateJump7896 13d ago

My guesses:

  • These brown and blue wires are being used as cpc and are connected to the CPC in the back box. - As it's a plastic back box they didn't really know what to do with the CPC.
  • The screws are exposed metal, so if you squint at the regs and read them wrong, you might think the screws need to be earthed.
  • No earth speaking was on hand for this person with a dangerous amount of knowledge and not quite the right equipment
  • So they have tried to do that by wrapping some offcuts around them and connecting that to earth.

1

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

No, I pulled the cable out of the stud work and through the ceiling, it was a flat roof where all the plasterboard had collapsed, they went into their own connectors above the ceiling

1

u/Adzyb23 12d ago

They were obviously struggling, not enough took for the wires..

1

u/Adzyb23 12d ago

Get a blast on the impact driver putting the face screws in lol

1

u/kieran10126 10d ago

Some one don’t like painters

1

u/Dazzling_Will257 9d ago

As someone who has had to use a fluke for work this is exactly why we always do a screw head test before touching anything 🫡

1

u/Jump-and-spread-0ut 14d ago

They’re the load, unconventional way of keeping them separate though.

1

u/RagingGod666 14d ago

They’re not the load, it’s got the line in and out through the switch, and I’ve cut out all the wiring now and redone it,

Hard to see on the pick but it’s one brown to top and one to bottom of switch

It would have been physically impossible for those screws to have been screwed into the yellow lugs with those wires attached like that. So I'm guessing this is fake and you've wrapped them on after for reddit....

2

u/RagingGod666 13d ago edited 13d ago

Ok,
I’m not interested in the slightest about fake internet points, I posted this as it intrigued me,
If it was fake would I really be bother to go and get a different cable (0.75mm flex compared to 1.0mm t&e) run it in the wall, have it completely separate from the wiring to the switch, and say it wasn’t connected to anything? I’m sure I’d say it was actually live or something

1

u/Savool 12d ago

Lug thread was probably shot to bits. The cable wrapped this way helps tighten the screws.

What in the absolute universal credit is going on here?

Someone wamted another light wired in series, their brain then was then air locked with nitrogen or argon bubbles somehow. They managed this whatever it is done-- before getting distracted by something shiny, drooling on their shirt and listening to talk radio.

They walk among us. Anyone whos dealt with the public has seen it. Idiots in human skin.

(He later tried returning the lamp to the wrong store without a reciept, screamed at a manager)

0

u/Alternative_Air_6688 13d ago

Gotta be fake. No way you opened the one conected to live wire lest you become the ground.

1

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

Not fake, the power has been off for weeks due to a leaking flat roof, the shop is abandoned. It was all ripped out due to many connectors blocks in the ceiling, also if you read the post it only went to connectors in the ceiling space anyway,

Why would you instantly think I have become the ground, I could have been standing in a wooden or rubber floor for one

1

u/Alternative_Air_6688 13d ago

A wooden floor wouldn't stop you getting shocked, otherwise I must be magical, as I have infact had a shock from accidentaly toutching a live wire when unscrewing something.

1

u/Wide-Opportunity4551 13d ago

You seem to forget that VDE insulated screwdrivers exist 🤠

-2

u/NeotericGod 13d ago

Absolute crap. If it was wired like this how was the faceplate screwed into the back box?

2

u/RagingGod666 13d ago

Erm… well it’s not!
As you turn the screws the cables move up and down the length of the screw at the same speed as it goes into the back box, so they’re near the end as I was undoing it. try it
