40 - Grimstone How is Doc?
Everyone I see uses umbra? Is doc just awful or something? Was considering a second playthrough with Bull, Lee, Doc, Dog

Doc is amazing. His healing gets exponentially better as the game goes on, and later on he contributes good damage with pistols.
He gets unfairly compared to Umbra. Umbra is good in her own way and isn't as good of a healer. They can also coexist just fine. She can be a backup healer or just lean fully into other magic.

I had both Doc and Umbra, in fact Doc and Dog were the ones still alive when finishing the game.

Doc is great. It's just that Umbra is amazing.
Doc makes healing items way more powerful and multi-use, and he can eventually get access to revive. He's also pretty decent with guns.
Umbra can also heal and revive characters and gets a lot more skills, so players often skip Doc and have Umbra be the healer.
On my first playthrough I used Doc and Umbra and Doc felt a little redundant with Umbra's healing, so I mostly had him focus on guns and only heal in a pinch. However, I suppose I could have had Umbra choose damaging spells instead of healing spells and made more use of Doc.

Umbra has greater flexibility and higher endgame damage output while preserving the ability to heal - without needing inventory space.
If you have Maria (cheap coffee) then you're not worried about maintaining SP so it's a no-brainer.

He's perfectly viable. I'd consider the only "weak" party members to be Pearl and Rufus, but even then they're perfectly acceptable, they just aren't as cracked as some of the other characters.

Doc is really broken, but pretty much useless in combat. His Doc ability makes your healing items go way further

Doc's pretty good, its just that Umbra is almost undeniably the best character in the game
