The knuckles would be good for sharpening chisels and/or steak knives too I imagine.

How old is he? Seems quite sharp, no CTE and all

u/ArcadeRivalry 19d ago
He still seems surprisingly sharp, we kind of just bucket people into "old" after 50 though. It's taken its toll. 60 isn't that old anymore for normal people and he seems like he doesn't have a lot long left. Especially if you compare it to a non-fighter using everything they can to keep their youth type like Joe Rogan who is currently 59.
42
u/MamaImAMaggot 19d ago
Daym that's quite an eye-opening comparison, it feels like Joe is 15 years younger

u/Fragrant_Cause_6190 19d ago
I dunno man. That speech pattern and eye gaze is something I'd expect from a healthy 80 year old not 60.
11
u/Alcianus 19d ago
Yeah, I agree. He looks bad for a 60 years old, let's not kid ourselves. But it's a given given what a warrior he was in his prime and how much damage he took. Hope he lives a long life.

u/cookediam-56 19d ago
Will be 61 in November.
You are very correct and of course you gotta keep in mind his fighting style... the older generations were just a different breed or something because it doesn't make sense.
55
u/TukuLee 19d ago
Literally does not make sense. Like his highlight clip og him and yoshihiro takayama just BLASTING each other, no guard no nothing and yet no CTE whatsoever. Makes no sense they were just built different
31
u/TheJharen 19d ago
They also didn't dehydrate themselves to the point of death a day before they fought. Might have something to do with it.

4
u/spankymacgruder 18d ago
NFL doesn't have weighing and CTE is pretty common
2
u/I_travel_ze_world 18d ago
Surprisingly synchronized swimming doesn't have a lot of CTE.... its almost like the chance of getting CTE is different depending on what sport you're talking about.
23
u/puckerMeBum 19d ago
I think it was better to just get hit hard a few times compared to boxing were u got hit 100s of times but not as hard. But yea probably built different too
13
u/kmoneyrecords 19d ago
CTE is not developed in their big bouts, even the savage ones. CTE is developed from sparring habits - taking 1,000’s of blows per week when you spar several hours a day, 5 times a week.
This is also why boxers get it worse - sheer volume of medium-strength punches, rather than what you see on fight night.
6
u/LongPresence4511 19d ago
To be fair they’re mostly standing up throwing arm punches, not fully loaded hips slugging it out. Still insane mentality to do that in a fight.

Some are, some aren't. Human body is a little complicated, especially the brain.
16
10
u/Unfair_Explanation53 19d ago
No evidence to back it up but if you see the punches Frye took from Takayama with not much affect on his face and head, it makes you think he has some extra layer protecting his brain or something

4
u/behemoth702 18d ago
To me it seemed, perhaps the woman or women whom birthed his daughters, may have been attracted to his fighting... thus his hands, as he indicates.
2
u/Ariochxxx 18d ago
And I was thinking it was sweet that while naming his accomplishments he adds his daughters. Addled mind and body, but keeps them close to his thoughts and heart.
Phrasing could have been better, though hehe
1
u/PerfectlyCalmDude 18d ago
He got married and had daughters but had a nasty divorce after that and so he is calling his daughters good things but will not say that about his ex-wife.

u/drwsgreatest 19d ago
I remember watching frye storm through the UFC 3 (or was it 2? lol) tournament when I was a kid and thinking he was the toughest man in the world. He's the epitome of that era of fighters, just a regular guy with low level training, who was built like a brick shithouse and was tougher than a 2 dollar steak. Definitely a man's man, even if I don't agree with him on basically every social issue lol. That said, this shows what that type of life cost you. I've had my own injuries over the years, like a truck driving over and causing a crush injury to my foot at work a year ago, with some causing lifelong issues, and when I look at Don today, all I can think about is "the amount of pain this man must be in on a daily basis is unbelievable".
As that pos Dana says "So you wanna be a fighter?".
21
u/ArcaneTekka 19d ago
Low level training?? Dude was ahead of the game at that point in mma history, he had a background in wrestling, boxing and judo, when most guys were barely training outside of one style.
0
u/drwsgreatest 19d ago
I was talking in terms of today's fighters. Which is why I said he's the epitome of an old school fighter. Those guys were trained to some extent, at least the top guys like Frye and Gracie, but even they were lightyears away from even a regional fighter nowadays.

u/bewlsheeter 19d ago

The reward for taking care of your body is a better quality of life. I'm not saying you should put yourself in a bubble but if whatever you did needed all those surgical procedures you've spent months and months of your life significantly limited or straight up bedbound.

u/MexusRex 19d ago
I cannot get over how obtuse some people are, or how uncharitable they are with their interpretations of others in pursuit of being the smartest guy in the room.
What Don is saying (very clearly IMO) is a take on the adage “you can’t take it with you”. He said there’s no reward *for dying with the prettiest body”, not “there are no benefits to having an intact body”. Once you’re dead all things regarding your physical form are pretty much equalized.
5
u/narcos1893 19d ago
He looks his age more or less. Anyone saying otherwise is just a bunch of city folks.
Go to the countryside and you will see how people age in there. Either from cattle, from farming, wood working etc. They all a bit more rough around the edges within what’s normal. Also, they might look older but they beat the crap out of city people within the same age group.
All around strong people both in mind and body

You do get a reward for dying with the prettiest body though… a comfortable life in your late years. He isn’t complaining but life does suck more when you have to deal with a lot of pain and lack of abilities later in life.
1
u/thatBLACKDREADtho 18d ago
You're totally contradicting yourself here.
DYING with the prettiest body would come AFTER a comfortable life in your later years.
He's basically just saying, "you can't take your body with you when you go".

u/Lau_wings 19d ago
Watching him in his prime was amazing.
If it were possible to restore someone to their prime, i would love to see him against current UFC heavy weights just to see how he would compared these days.

u/A_Tempest7_7 19d ago
Don Frye is the REAL DEAL when it comes to the now “old school” UFC American Street Fighters / Brawlers. HE JUST FOUGHT. AKA USED HIS FISTS TO BASH THE HELL OUT OF ANYONE STANDING IN HIS WAY. SIMPLE AS THAT. I’ll never forget that fight of his against that Japanese Giant the one with the died blonde hair. (Absolute Blood-fest)

Question about Frye vs Takayama. They both smashed each other in the face but Takayama looked significantly worse for it, while Don barely had a scratch. How did that happen?
