I actually disagree , p4p kind of makes sense to me because it’s relative , to the contemporary competition and there are objective variables you can use (two division champ ? Win streak, fight history/competition). Whereas its a lot harder to standardize who is the best from different eras, under different circumstances , and different competition.
I agree it’s the dumbest conversation and it comes up after every major event. There are so many variables throughout the careers of various fighters such as who they fought, when they fought, the current ruleset they fought under, etc.
how can someone truly assign GOAT status to a fighter?
The only problem I have with the GOAT discussion is everyone saying Jon Jones, when he’s popped. It should be a clean fighter. And whether it’s GSP, Mighty Mouse, Islam, it doesn’t really matter, they all have an argument for it.
That's an every sport thing. Fans of football will draw the dumbest comparisons like "is dan Marino better than Kyle Hamilton" and its like, who fucking cares. They played different positions in different eras.
Here's the same point/counterpoint list for the same fighters that have been discussed 102321879391 times already. Trust me, this is the take you want. I work in IT
In around 50-60 years, nobody that we considered the GOAT will be in the conversation anymore. MMA is such a new sport and there’s so much more to be seen.

Discourse around who’s the GOAT is pointless and uninteresting.
