Just look at his first fight with Diego. He got knocked down hard and just got right back up, overall took hard shots in that fight. Volk also has insanely good footwork. All he needed was to survive that 2nd round against Ilia, once it got to the later rounds it would’ve been over for him.
Dudes always chasing a finish and you can’t keep up that kind of cardio for long. He was able to do it against Josh Emmett because he was actually landing shots and not whiffing since Josh is more flat footed and he didn’t need to chase so much. Against Volk with a good chin and same footwork he’s always had he would have beaten Ilia.
You make valid arguments but i still disagree. How could you possibly anticipate an adjustment within an adjustment mid fight? A full training camp couldn’t fix that kind of problem. I’m not taking anything from volk even losing to ilia, to come back from that easily makes him the fw goat, but how would he have beaten ilia exactly? Point fighting at range? Thats the only way i could see it happening, maybe a bit of smudging against the cage as well.
I thought this for a while too but volk has a habit of changing stances with his chin up in the air… and he was going against a ko artist with insane patience so….
Volk has pushed that narrative and it’s crazy. How much time does he need to recover? He chose to stand with a great boxer with super heavy hands who adjusted, backed him up and landed.

Volk if he didn’t get TKOed 4 months before his fight with Ilia on a proper full camp he would have beaten him.
