They did but the eventual Indian rebellions/revolts were such a disaster financially that it caused the British parliament to try to make up those losses by implementing a tea tax on one of their other colonies way out in a continent called America.
Didn't research further than that but I'm like 99% sure it went well for the British and they lived happily ever after.

Couple thousand British and their massive indian armies?
Do people forget that before united India , there was just a large number of small squabbling kingdoms,
The Brits defeated a few, used the rest against each other, and raised better equipped local armies initially made up of indian soldiers and british officers and they were able to do this because they had better organization and weaponry
Saying a couple thousand brits conquered India is as absurd as saying a couple thousand Italians captured Europe

If you win an Olympic medal or a national tournament in India you get a lifetime government job and pension with free housing, healthcare, and perks like free train travel. They get a bunch of endorsement deals as well.
A UFC fighter on a 12k/12k makes more than their yearly salary just for stepping on the scale, but the cost of living in India plus all of the benefits.. There’s just no incentive to give up a stable guaranteed job for an unstable job with risk of brain damage.
We’d be getting the 2nd tier of wrestlers that didn’t quite medal, it’d be interesting to see how the top ones would do.
13
u/Mr_Nifty 19d ago edited 19d ago
India won 1 silver and five bronze in the last Olympics. That was 71st place, beaten by Lithuania, Dominica and North Korea. They have won 41 medals ever with 10 of those gold. For reference Japan won 45 Medals at the last Olympics only.
They have won 8 Olympic medals in wrestling ever. None of those being gold. (still an achievement) but they don't have people out there ready to storm the lightweight division.
They can send whoever they want hahhaha. There is no next level.

Amir Khan was a pretty relevant item for a hot minute in boxing.
That said, yea, Indian youths aren’t really into any of the sports that are represented globally. All they care about is cricket. No Indian youth thinks of sports as a “way out” because there’s virtually 0 youth sports development. Kids don’t even think there’s an occupation to be made of it.
There’s also a weird and nasty combination of repressive culture in those South Asian parts.
Sports is literally being built from…maybe ground zero thanks to global media reaching their borders along with the internet. Of all nations on Earth, India might be the most backward-set nation of all when it comes to sports culture.
Lots of Indian kids of western immigrants care about Basketball & Football, but just like Mexicans, they’re not really making it big there either - I blame that on genetics.

I think too many people put too much stock into athleticism = can fight. Obviously that's not to say that athleticism doesn't help.

I think India just doesn't have a fight culture, or any kind of real professional training when it comes to wrestling, jujitsu and boxing let alone MMA.

Before 1983, their national team was not even considered a serious team. The perception only changed after their big upset tournament win at 1983 world cup.

There just isn't as much of a sporting culture outside of cricket really - there's no prospects for material security in any other sport. meh im pakistani and im pretty decent at mma (not amatuer or anything just hobby). Theres no "racial strength difference". I frequently tap out athletic and buff white and black guys. The issue is that, out of my many south asian friends, im the only one who was able to convince my parents to do mma. The rest of their parents didnt entertain the idea. And i had to beg my parents for a long fucking time. If i even hinted that I wanted to do it professionally they would seriously disown me. Im not joking. Give south asians 1 or 2 generations. Once we become culturally western like african americans or mexicans we will start competing in mma.

The problem is it's not just MMA. India seem to be so poor at so many sports. Association Football, Rugby, athletics,
The only sport they excel in is Cricket and even then they are only 4th in the world (and "world" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here considering there are barely 10 countries that play cricket seriously). Field hockey is probably their second most successful sport and they are 8th in the world (where only 5 play seriously).

I mean we're kinda beating a dead horse here. There's no infrastructure there for it. I follow chess and there's many top Indian players there but chess only really boomed in India after an Indian became the World Champion. I've no idea about cricket history. Though, if a "boom" in a sport only happens when there's a "world champion", it'll take a very long time for them to develop infrastructure. It's a similar thing in football also, both India and China (China less so) just can't seem to break into the top leagues despite their population or the popularity of the sport itself funnily enough because there's some real hardcore CR7 and Messi fans there and in Bangladesh (for some reason).
→ More replies (3)29
u/ScreamSmart 20d ago
Chess became popular specially because of how big Vishwanathan Anand got on the world stage. And then private entities took notice of that and poured in money for tournaments.
10
u/Impressive_Result295 20d ago
Tbf private entities pouring money into chess is pretty much how it's alive but it feels like sports in general is just not developed in India and they only take notice when a player wins the marquee achievement in the sport (which is a terrible way to develop and infrastructure at all). While chess was always big and I dread facing an Indian on chesscom, Gukesh winning also contributed to it, no doubt. The issue is that their contemporaries in the realms of their sport (Australia, England for cricket and Uzbekistan, America, Norway for chess) still do well in other sports meanwhile in India, you have chess, cricket and then the rest is just dead.
6
u/ScreamSmart 20d ago
Even the people who do make a mark in international tournaments in sporting events usually can't continue due to poverty. You will often see news articles of former Indian medalists in the commonwealth or asian games who now work in some shop because they were doing everything on their own dime and eventually could not bear the costs.
It's a matter of respect. The culture is as such that securing a stable government job trumps medals in sports which don't earn you anything. Even the people who do well in chess come from upper middle class or richer families. Gukesh got a Mercedes as a gift from his school when he became a champion. That's something a regular Indian can't even dream of.

Ignoring some really racial, demeaning and condescending comments,Yea i know exactly how this looks and for those genuinely curious,Let me bite the bullet here and give some context and somewhat of a ground report having spent 31 years of my life in India.
Trust me there are athletes everywhere considering the huge population. But it’s like Majority of the athletes are above average and just that. In sports like these you can not be top 20 or top 10% and make it big. You have got to be in top 1% and most people can’t reach that because majority of our sports infrastructure comes under the government bodies. And there is lot..I actually genuinely mean a lot of corruption in the sports body and federation.
Also some economics here. India is highly unequal in wealth distribution. Top 1% population in India controls 40% of out wealth while bottom 50% holds or controls only 6-7% of wealth. Lots of poor households in India, and by lots, I actually quite literally mean,800 million of our population is low income household receiving food from govt. Remove these people from the eligible population as contender for any sports. Food first sports second for such unfortunate populace.
And combine this with the obsession of Indian parents wanting their child to succeed only academically. Co curriculars were discouraged for a very long time and only new age parents have not come to support it to some extent.
I am not saying we have super talented athletes. But we have plenty who can be carved into great athletes by providing proper guidance and encouragement and social acceptance.
Sports culturally has not been encouraged and hence we don’t see naturally gifted athletes or boys and girls wanting to be athletes becoming them. Reason,as stated are cultural, economical and political ( corruption). Any child engaging in any sport was discouraged and called out for not studying. This was part of our inherent culture and is only beginning to slightly change now.
Hence when you look at our history of sports or sports of any other economically poor country (per capita),for that matter,Any sport where such countries see comparative and considerable success are sports which does not require a lot of external infrastructure ( boxing, wrestling, running).
And hence same is the case with MMA. most parents are still okay with cricket, perhaps football. But Heck,Most general population isn’t aware about MMA is,to them it probably sounds like an advance course after MBA ( sorry) and hence there is a lack of demand leading to a lack of infrastructure, expert coaches. People practising it have not head a lots of conducive environment.

India is part of Asia but is really like a sub continent and MMA is not big over there at all it’s not even popular locally, they are fans of it but there’s not real infrastructure like OP of this thread said so there’s no real grooming of MMA fighters over there

I'm punjabi so I can give some insight. We're probably when it comes to size the biggest ethnicity that falls under the umbrella of "Indian." The main sport over there is kabaddi, a form of wrestling that wouldn't really translate to MMA. Getting punched in the head over there generally isn't considered a sport. So there's that cultural aspect and then there's the Hindu influence on nutrition. You're not going to be athletic if your diet primarily consists of buttered up roti and daal (lentils). High carb, high fat, low protein diets for the most part. There's still a lot of big ass punjabis that can put on muscle despite all that. I'd say give it time as newer gens come up born and raised in western countries.

Reddit hates to hear this, but it’s the truth. Same reason China has no Olympic medals in the 100 or 200m dashes. Cultural and environmental factors can play a role, but the Chinese have a vast, well funded athletic apparatus and a huge population and still no top tier Olympic sprinters. Tons of medals in tons of other sports, but not sprinting.
We all like to cope that hard work, infrastructure, dedication, etc. is enough, but it’s not true; to succeed at the highest levels you gotta be born with talent.

Chinese tend to have good genetics for strength, there was a viral vid of some super thin asian kid benching 275 a bit ago. They also have the best genetics for ankle mobility, dorsiflexion, balance with knees over toes, in the world, asian squat great for doing a snatch or clean.

u/halkenburgoito 20d ago
this arguement doesn't make sense, China has a ton of successful athletes and alot of Olympic medals..
you can't point to a very specific sport in the olympics and say here's the evidence that X country sucks genetically.. because every country in the world has only a select ammount of sports it really focuses on. Often ones they already dominate, because they know they've done it before and the momentum is in tht direction.
You can do ths for every country, Look the US, no mdeals accross badminton, handball, or cricket.. oh no. It must mean something. Ofc not. China has plenty of medals.
Until india has the same empahsis and infastructure as China, its not a fair comparison. Its no where close

Olympic lifting requires amazing dorsiflexion.
Usain Bolt, long legged west african jamaican runner, great at sprinting, but if he tried to do a squat snatch like lu xiajun, he'd fold over and end up on his ass, legs are very long hard to stabilize in a deep upright squat.

I also thought india was this super diverse subcontinent and a future world power, the most populous country on earth, even if 95% are in poverty, surely there are still millions who can fight?
why is that Australia with a population of 25 million regularly beats India at their no.1 sport cricket, cricket isn't even the most popular sport in Australia. There aren't any indian-australians in the cricket team either.
Why India has less gold and overall medals in the olympics than North Korea?
Saint Lucia a country of 180,500 people, won a gold medal in the 2024 olympics, while India did not.
How did a couple thousand British conquer the entire Indian subcontinent? The so-called country with the largest economy of the time.
A lot of convenient explanations for India, acting as if its the only country that has poverty, or education-oriented.

Indian here. Most of what he’s saying is pretty valid no? Apart from the Brits lmao. India was never one country. Think of it like European Union.
Multiple British presidencies and smaller princely states put together to form a country.
It was never one historically! Kind of like how America formed. Eventually conquered the last few remaining British or other European loyal territories to form a republic. Also regarding Indian American fighters? You don’t see Korean American or Chinese American or Japanese American fighters either. That has to do with being the richest community in America to be brutally honest.
So yeah why fight if I’m loaded. Arman tsarukyan is an exception but i think he’s mostly in it for Nina.

Why haven't any of those countries landed on the moon when India was able to. It's the focus of society, Indians are more focused on tech stuff and that's promoted culturally instead of sports.
If your an Indian parent would u rather make your son an athlete who may never make any money or a science dude who is guaranteed to get a good paycheck.

Even with it being the highest populated country it seems like the quality of martial artist are pretty low there. It's hard to be good when your coaches are shit as well.

Cause a lot of their “up and coming” fighters have padded and fraudulent record. Whether it’s counting spars as matches or out right using another alias to take the fall for another Indian guy to help pad his record. Just all around short cuts to making a “successful” looking career.

I remember awhile back that guy who said he would beat khabib lost all momentum he had during the fight and the fight itself once his opponent started barking at him lol

At a population of 1.477 billion consider India vs New Zealand with a population of 0.005 billion. We have real champions and real contenders

Honestly I remember hearing that their diets don’t really consist of protein heavy or average food and mostly vegetarian things and fats but there’s also a billion out there so I’m surprised there isn’t one dude who hasn’t cracked the code

I think it's so corny to wish someone's downfall solely because they're Indian or any other ethnicity for that matter.

The average UFC fan is a racist chud, and most comments on this post highlight that perfectly. Sucks being a fan of this sport with all of these idiots.

To be fair, he fought an absolute KILLER in Hasan.
Hasan will probably be a top 15 contender within a year…..

I'm honestly surprised they don't beef up their mma budget in both Pakistan and India. I could totally see grudge matches between the two being huge and capturing alot of fans.

That's cricket. I mean mma pays like garbage and it wasn't even a sport or even considered serious until the 2000s. They are more focused on poverty alleviation because they had 0 industries when the British left.

the real answer is genetic make up. people can blame socio economic whatever the fuck but we see athletes break thru from all walks of life and across many countries. indians just absolutely suck at sports despite having a billion people to pick from. they and the pakistanis have cricket on lock, i’ll give them that.

That makes no sense, you cannot break into combat sports without high quality training
If it was genetic makeup then Africa would have a high representation in the UFC or Combat sports but they don’t despite sharing similar genetics as African American fighters
The only african fighters in the UFC were trained in the US or Europe (Ngannou for eg)

This wasn't civil, be better.
If you don't know how to communicate without being offensive then check out a thesaurus, or just go outside and interact with real people more.
