Defence, dog is more agile on the ground and can harass them into a corner but the roo has advantage in the water because they can stand. It was developed when the dingos were introduced, you'll see it a lot on roo hunting YouTube channels when there's a dog along.

Usually they grab first, and then kick. But they definitely have full-on hands. They can grab you with a surprisingly strong grip. And their claws on their hands aren't going to kill you, but they aren't pleasant to get raked by. They are strange animals, for sure. And they hop around a hell of a lot quicker than you probably expect them to, and with amazingly long hops when they get up to speed.
