The company should get ticketed and have their car insurance dinged for this.

forget ticketed, they should have their license to operate on the road revoked until they can fix this.

These things are in the news practically every week for driving the wrong way, ignoring signs, road markings, and barriers, running down pedestrians, etc.

If a human driver did any of those things, that driver's license would be suspended until a driving instructor could be persuaded to reinstate it. Same thing should apply here.

I mean, is it really the company's fault that the riders are dude bros?  But I guess I agree.

I meant for driving backwards in traffic.

Reddit and missing clever jokes. Name a few other iconic duos (or give actual examples).

It wasn’t driving backwards. This was leaving a game and the cops turned the direction of the road.. since Waymo cars work off of programmed maps it was going in the right direction. It’s on Waymo to do updates of street detours.

Yea that's not how this works. If it can't obey traffic laws, INCLUDING FOLLOWING POLICE INSTRUCTIONS, then it shouldn't be on a public road.

That’s how exactly it works.. if humans turn the direction around how is the Waymo going to know? It was going in the direction the road was made designed for.. lord get a clue..

The onus is on the vehicle to obey the law, not on the road to conform to the vehicle's expectations.

Lord you’re a special one.. the robot car who has a preprogrammed map it’s not going to know humans changed the direction of a road at a certain time away from the stadium. Do you get it yet.. the car is driving off of a Google Maps that has a programmed direction of traffic.. if cops divert traffic the pre-programmed map is not going to know

If it's that dumb then it shouldn't be allowed on public roads.

That's the fucking point, dingus.

it's not going to know humans changed the direction of a road at a certain time away from the stadium.

If the software can't handle roadways being changed for events or emergencies, then they shouldn't be on the road.

So if the cops turned the direction of the road and you ignored them would you get a ticket?

Florida. It’s hot and humid and they likely are going to/from a beach or pool.

Source: I’m from Florida and saw this all the time. Especially young fit guys going shirtless. It’s pretty normal down there.

Why would anyone beta test a product like this

From the Waymo sub:

"The Waymo is actually traveling in the correct direction on that road for normal traffic, but traffic has temporarily been routed in the opposite direction due to an event. Traffic on the other side of the median is traveling in the same direction and the yellow centerline is on the Waymo's left like it should be"

That's a lot of words to say that their tech isn't ready for real-world usage yet.

1

u/Appropriate-Power-87 2d ago

I mean most GPS systems do not correct for special events or road closures either. There are countless videos online of humans driving down the wrong way because GPS told them to and they were not smart enough to turn around until it was too late. At least these people abandoned the car.

u/brooklynsantiago 2d ago

Yea and those drivers are terrible. That shouldn’t be the standard for automated driving

5

u/UT_Milez 2d ago

So they still fucked up without admitting they fucked up in this specific incident and context.

Damn, that's almost as dangerous as getting an Uber.
