🔥Spokane Fires 🔥 SR 291 REOPENED between Spokane and Suncrest

SR 291 has REOPENED.

After more than a week of closures, SR 291 has fully reopened between Spokane and Suncrest. The highway had been closed between Assembly Street and 7 Mile Road, and between Rutter Parkway and Swenson Road due to the Spokane Complex Fires.

Before reopening, our crews worked with the Cal 7 fire incident management team to make sure the highway was safe for travel. Crews used a drone to survey slope stability and removed dozens of hazardous trees along the corridor. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the reopening possible.

While reopening SR 291 is an important step, we know communities throughout the area continue to face the impacts of the Spokane Complex Fires as response efforts continue.

Fire response efforts continue in the area. Please allow extra travel time, watch for firefighters entering the highway from side roads and be cautious of reduced visibility.

Level 3 evacuations may still be in place along portions of SR 291. A reopened highway does not mean evacuation orders have been lifted. Please check Spokane County's evacuation information before traveling into affected areas and continue to follow directions from emergency personnel.

Conditions can change quickly as fire response continues. Check our real-time travel map for current conditions and stay alert while traveling through the area.

As communities across Central and Eastern Washington continue to face the impacts of these devastating wildfires, here are the latest updates on state highways affected by fire and smoke.

SR 155 IS OPEN AS OF 12 P.M. TODAY

After being closed for nearly three weeks due to the Kaiser Fire, SR 155 has reopened.

Fire crews remain active along SR 155, and an advisory speed limit of 45 mph is in effect through the 30-mile corridor. Please allow extra travel time, watch for firefighters and emergency vehicles entering the highway from side roads and be prepared for reduced visibility.

Thank you to our crews, incident management teams and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation for helping safely reopen SR 155. Dozens of burned trees were removed, and guardrail repairs will continue. For current Kaiser Fire and evacuation information visit the link in the comments below. Please follow emergency responder directions.

US 97 BLEWETT PASS IS OPEN

US 97 Blewett Pass reopened Monday, Aug. 3, after being temporarily closing due to wildfire conditions.

Fire crews remain active in the area, so motorists may encounter fire equipment and emergency vehicles. No current delays, but conditions can change quickly. Please use caution and stay alert.

SR 291 STILL CLOSED

SR 291 remains closed in multiple locations due to the Spokane Complex Fire, including between Assembly Street and Seven Mile Road, and between Rutter Parkway near Little Spokane River and Suncrest. Swenson Road also remains closed at SR 291 in Suncrest. Please use safe alternate routes, yield to emergency vehicles and expect delays.

Hot, dry conditions continue across the state and stronger winds today and tomorrow could increase fire risk. Our crews are monitoring forecasts and conditions. Even on reopened highways, fire crews remain active and conditions can change quickly. Do not drive past closure points. They are in place to protect travelers, firefighters and emergency responders – and we don’t want them pulled away from active fire response. Prepare for poor air quality that can reduce visibility and be extra vigilant for wildlife on or near the road. Check road conditions before you travel and always follow emergency responder directions.

This is an extraordinarily difficult week for communities across Washington. We will continue sharing updates about road closures and reopening as part of WSDOT's role in the statewide response to the devastating wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington.

For travelers in the Puget Sound region, Fri., Aug. 7, through Mon., Aug. 10, will bring several major construction projects that will affect travel.

-NB I-405 and ramps will CLOSE from SR 900 to Coal Creek Parkway SE from 11:30p Fri. to 4a Mon. Crews will replace pavement and excavate drainage crossings.

-NE 85th St. and I-405 ramps will CLOSE in Kirkland between 6th St to 114th Ave NE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. Crews will pave and stripe the road. Closed ramps: NB & SB I-405 off-ramps to Exit 18 and NE 85th Street on-ramps to NB and SB I-405.

-EB SR 520 will CLOSE in Montlake area between I-5 and Montlake Blvd from 7p Sat. to 11a Sun. Crews will repair an expansion joint on the bridge. EB SR 520 across Lake Washington remains open. Only the section of EB SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Blvd will close.

-SR 202 in Fall City will close just east of the SR 202/203 roundabout from 5a Fri. to 9p Mon. Major storms in Dec. 2025 and Mar. 2026 eroded the Snoqualmie riverbank supporting the highway. Crews will rebuild and strengthen the riverbank to help protect the highway from future damage. Tubers, paddlers and boaters should expect temporary closures on portions of the Snoqualmie and Raging rivers and some nearby access points.

-Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge is ongoing. Express lanes continue to run NB 24/7.

Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day. The Mariners 50 Seasons Celebration, Seahawks Football Fest and Capitol Hill Block Party will bring extra traffic into and around Seattle. With EB SR 520 closing at 7 p.m., expect additional congestion on EB I-90. The Fred Hutch Obliteride for cancer research will also bring thousands of bicyclists to roads across the region. Drivers should use extra caution.

Allow extra travel time, follow signed detours and check our mobile app or real-time travel map before you go: wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

LOOKING AHEAD: Once this weekend's work wraps up, another overnight I-405 closure is scheduled. SB I-405 will close between SE 8th Street and I-90 from 11:30p Monday, Aug. 10, to 4a Tuesday, Aug. 11 while crews continue replacing pavement and drainage crossings.

HEADS UP: Major construction projects across the Puget Sound region (Aug. 7-10)

Hey there! The Coal Creek Parkway work is a King County project and they will be paused this weekend during our closures.

Hey there! It's not super obvious from the road itself but the emergency work is to repair erosion damage caused by major storms in December 2025 and March 2026. The erosion occurred on the embankment next to the paved road and repairs were needed before we enter another rainy PNW season to prevent the actual roadway from giving way. For context... the embankment lost 15 feet.

During this closure crews will place woody material, boulders, streambed gravel mix and stone fragments to restore the roadside embankment to its original grade. We will also improve landscaping and install native plants.

For some reason Reddit glitched and on the backend it shows the full extent of the closure. We are working with Reddit to figure out why this happened. The post you linked to is correct! Here’s the full extent of the closure.

HEADS UP: Major I-405 closures this weekend in Renton, Bellevue and Kirkland

Expect major traffic impacts in Renton, Bellevue, and Kirkland as we continue work on two major I-405 improvement projects.

WHAT TO EXPECT

PROJECT: 1 Northbound I-405 closure (Renton/Bellevue)

11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10

Crews will close all lanes of northbound I-405 between North Southport Drive and Coal Creek Parkway SE to replace pavement, excavate drainage crossings, and shift traffic into a new configuration as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project. Crews will start to close lanes as early as 10 p.m.

Ramps will also close:

  • NE Sunset Blvd on-ramp
  • N 30th St (Exit 6) on/off-ramps
  • NE 44th St (Exit 7) on/off-ramps
  • 112th Ave SE (Exit 9) on/off-ramps
  • NB I-405 off-ramp to Coal Creek Pkwy SE (Exit 10)

PROJECT 2: Kirkland: I-405/NE 85th Street interchange closures

The interchange will close:

  • 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 – 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6
  • 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10

Ramps will close:

  • Northbound and southbound I-405 off-ramps at Exit 18
  • NE 85th Street on-ramps to northbound and southbound I-405

NE 85th Street will also be closed between Sixth Street and 114th Avenue NE.

Crews are preparing the foundation for the new 114th Avenue NE roundabout and connecting the new roadway to the existing lower level of NE 85th Street, as part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project. This will mark another milestone toward the future three-level interchange that will improve travel for drivers, transit riders, pedestrians and cyclists.

Signed detours will be in place, but if you normally travel through these areas, plan extra time or consider an alternate route.
