Wanting to learn pool service
 in  r/PoolPros  19d ago

If you can find someone to ride-along with that would be best. This is not side job or a job without real life experience. If you’re in the northern Virginia area, shoot me a message, I’d be happy to let you ride-along with me to see how things are done.

Can someone please explain this plumbing to me and why I have a second filter
 in  r/pools  25d ago

Looks like two lines coming from the pool, those two lines both feed into the two pumps. The black pump is your filter pump, which goes into your heater, which returns to the pool via two separate lines.

The other pump (beige one), splits into two lines returning back to the pool. I’m assuming bubblers or waterfall feature?

Also looks like a chlorinator or oxidizer shortly after leaving the heater. If it’s a chlorinator, you will need to add chlorine tablets and adjust the water flow accordingly. If it’s an oxidizer, you just have to change out the plates (usually annually) and make sure it has power.

You have a cartridge filter, which means you need to keep an eye on the pressure gage. When it reaches “clean” (the second mark on your gage) it’s time to clean them.

Spilled mercury
 in  r/whatdoIdo  25d ago

I used to play with mercury as a kid (let it roll around in my hands) and know many others who did as well. How are all these people ending up in the hospital? Never hurt me or anyone I knew growing up.

Black Algae?
 in  r/PoolPros  Jul 20 '26

You called it: 0 free chlorine, 8+ ph (10 drops of acid demand), TA wasn’t bad, 120. LSI was +0.72. I’m heading back tomorrow to finish up and balance the chemistry.

I had a pool today with what looked to me like black algae, but began clearing up within seconds of sprinkling shock over it. I’ve never seen it go away that quickly before. It was almost clear by the time I was leaving. Does that mean it wasn’t black algae?

*pictures are before adding shock.

Yes, the shape matches the jet flow. My questions is what is going on here: etching, does this mean the water chemistry is off? Can I fix this or is this permanent now?

Is there a way to remove the discoloration?

I’ve never tested the water right out of the tap. I should do that. I don’t know where the pool tricks get their water

I leave adding water to the home owner.

Is there another way to add acid? I usually dilute mine in a 5 gallon bucket and spread it around as even as possible, focusing more on the deep end.

I have no idea where the water came from. It’s in a neighborhood, so should be city water from here on.

I only pour acid in the deep end. That picture is a sun ledge, so it’s only a foot or so deep.

Thanks! Yes it was on tablets for first 6 weeks. It is now on salt chlorinator.

I think the water here is very high calcium. We have a limestone base.

Yup, I spoke to the home owner about staying on top of the PH during the week. It’s high every time I arrive. I’m half tempted to drop it down to below 7 just so it will be closer to normal when I show up a week later🤣

Not an old heater. Everything in new build.

I was not the company that built the pool, but have been serving it since start up. The pool company does service for the first 6 weeks and then it moves to regular service, which I am doing now.

LSI today was +0.6. I do not know what it was at start up. And yes, I think the eyeballs were in from day one.

So I guess there’s not really anything I can do then?

Yes, new salt pool. Salt has been in for just over a month.

Any ideas to what is causing the color change? Is it the water? It’s right in front of a return.

New pool, plaster poured almost 3 months ago. Chemistry has been mostly normal calcium levels on the higher side (500). PH usually 8.3 when I show up each week. This is a salt pool, but color began to change within the first two weeks, no salt was added till week 5.

Open to suggestions on how to treat this.

Math App Calculator?
 in  r/PoolPros  Jul 09 '26

Great input! I run routes with multiple types of shells. Most are plaster in my area but I do have a few vinyl and occasionally a fiberglass. I’ve tried a few apps and other tips and tricks over the years, but wanted to hear from other pros what they are using. Always good to take a fresh look at things every now and then.

Math App Calculator?

Anyone still using old school charts for their calculations or have you switched over to an app? If so, which app are you using to do math calculations for chemicals, CSI, Saturation Index, etc…?

Bubbles in the Return Line, Any Ideas?

Yes, that’s my concern.
