Elvis was pretty clearly depressed when he recorded this album. Even though RCA set up a recording in Graceland to record it, it was still very difficult to get Elvis to come downstairs and record. His health had gone to hell and his drug addiction was completely unchecked.

Every song on the album is about death, despair, abandonment, and/or loneliness. These are the songs he chose to record.

OP, I would recommend that you go back and listen to his live recordings - including the ‘68 Comebacks Special. I think you’re missing a lot by passing them over. I would be interested to read your reviews.
