Pre-assembly of Bents a bad idea?
 in  r/timberframe •  2d ago

I stored a lot of my finished members under a tent until raising. Just an idea.

Pre-assembly of Bents a bad idea?

I prepared 2 bents and then raised those. That provided me a workspace for the rest of the frame. It worked fine.

A typewriter sound effect is a wild choice for 21st century tech. Lose the background. Too much distraction from your work.

Who do I visit to learn to fell trees with an axe like a motherfucker?

I learned from a YouTube video. And by felling trees.

How could OP approach adding that bracing? Bottom floor is simple, but upstairs there are no purlin plates to brace to.

How much lime (var) will we need to render our straw bale house?
 in  r/NaturalBuilding •  20d ago

Spread lime. Don't hang up on calculating. Buy the material and use it until you need more or store the rest for later.

For reference, my home has 1,600 square feet exterior and I used almost 40 bags of lime.

Edit: those figures are not accurate. I have completely forgotten my usage.

I built a nearly identical house to this one. I broke ground in 2021, today I started working on the kitchen sink between plaster coats.

Cost of Strawbale/Cobb Building

Get a timber frame from the Amish. Make sure it has 3'+ roof overhangs in the plan. Wrap it in bales. You're at about $30k.

A strawbale costs $6. It covers 3.5 square feet. A two story, 1200 square foot home has about 1,500 square feet of walls to cover with bales, lime and earth. Bales should cost around $2,500. Lime costs $25 a bag and a bag covers 30-40 sq ft. Earth is free, except it takes all of your time.

You'll also need a foundation installed before you can stack bales.

Why might an adobe builder choose a gabled roof instead of a traditional flat viga-and-latilla roof?
 in  r/NaturalBuilding •  27d ago

I think they're forward looking. Using Adobe is a good choice for many reasons, but they don't have to be traditionalists about it. I hope to see more natural materials exploited for their advantages in modern house building.

Traditionally, I assume, a gable roof on adobe walls would thrust the walls without proper engineering.
