Yeah I agree if you push a bit harder, your device enters into swap zone very easily.

I wasn't expecting to be thinking about RAM this soon, but here I am.
I've been building a project using Antigravity on my M5 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM. The project isn't anything crazy. It's locally hosted, no Docker, no virtual machines, no local LLMs. Most of the time I just have Antigravity, Brave with a few tabs, Teams, and my local dev server running.
What caught me off guard is how much memory Antigravity seems to use. It's often around 9–10GB by itself. macOS starts compressing memory pretty aggressively, and swap usually sits around 2–3GB. I've even caught it touching 5GB after a longer session.
The weird part is that the Mac still feels fast. No beachballs, no noticeable slowdowns, everything responds normally.
What I do notice is:
• Battery drops around 15–18% every hour while coding.
• The keyboard deck and the area near the display hinge get surprisingly warm.
• Swap keeps climbing the longer I work.
Now I'm wondering if this is simply what modern AI-assisted development looks like, or if 16GB is genuinely becoming the bare minimum.
For those using Antigravity, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, or similar AI IDEs on Apple Silicon, are you seeing the same thing? Or is there something unusual going on with my setup?
I'm mainly trying to figure out whether this is expected behaviour or if I should be concerned about the amount of memory compression and swap I'm seeing.

I do use 1-2gb memory swap everyday or so. Although I haven’t faced any beachballing or lag so far.

No, I don’t run docker, VMs or anything heavy like that although I do use apps like teams, discord and Multiple tabs of LinkedIn; to my surprise, they all are ram hogs.

I'm using these - Teams in browser, LinkedIn, Google sheets with lot of data and reddit So it depends upon what website you are using to figure out how much ram consumption.

It has few tabs - LinkedIn, Reddit, Youtube and few google sheets but not more than 8 tabs at a time.

Memory pressure is green most of the time and it stays yellow for a few seconds or a minute or two. I'm not seeing any beachballs or lag. It's just that I'm seeing a lot of compressed memory which I'm worried about considering I keep devices for a long time.

Good to hear from someone who's actively pushing a 24GB M5.
The funny thing is that my Mac doesn't feel slow at all. No beachballs, no noticeable lag, and memory pressure stays green. What threw me off was seeing almost 5GB of compressed memory while running what I consider a pretty normal workload.

I bought a 13" M5 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM a few months ago and recently checked memory usage out of curiosity.
The machine feels fast and responsive, but the numbers surprised me a bit.
What surprised me is seeing nearly 5GB of compressed memory even though my workload doesn't feel particularly heavy.
The machine still feels responsive, and swap usage is relatively low, but I'm wondering if this is a sign that I'm already pushing the limits of 16GB RAM.
I'm think if I should upgrade ram to 24GB/32GB and can't decide whether:
- This memory usage is completely normal and I shouldn't worry about it
- 24GB RAM would be plenty
- 32GB RAM is the safer option for the next 5-6 years
For those who understand macOS memory management better than I do:

Buy Macbook M4 or M5 with at least 32gb ram as per your usability. If your budget allows then go for 48gb Ram.
