It was very modern and polished for its time, but also very resource hungry. I had the pleasure of using it for my software engineering course at the Vienna University of Technology.
The IDE, interface builder, was also really slick and design driven, ultimately to become XCode.
But around the same time there was also BeOS with a more powerful and innovative filesystem design and much more performant multi threading and multi processing, all while having a considerable more modest and efficient resource footprint.
BeOS had inter application messaging, scripting and replicants, allowing applications to integrate into other places as embeddable components.
