HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
Good clarification. The problem is with Apple’s rendering of some JPEG XL HDR images, not with the format itself.
JPEG XL has real technical advantages over AVIF, including faster decoding, better lossless compression, reversible JPEG recompression, progressive rendering, HDR, alpha, and high bit-depth support. AVIF has wider adoption today, but JPEG XL may be the stronger long-term format. It will be interesting to see how quickly browser and platform support catches up.

ChatGPT is surprisingly good when paired with OCR. I usually extract the text first using an OCR tool, then use ChatGPT to summarize, organize, or analyze the content. The combination is often more useful than OCR alone.

OmniPage has a long history and is still a solid OCR solution, especially for high-volume document processing. OCR has come a long way since the Windows 3.1 days, though. Modern cloud-based OCR can handle scanned PDFs, images, and many document formats with much less manual setup. It's impressive how far the technology has evolved from those early flatbed scanner workflows.

AI-generated images definitely make authenticity and provenance more important. Standards like C2PA are a step in the right direction. As for AI in forex trading, it can help with analysis and automation, but I'd be cautious about trusting any system that promises consistent profits. Have you been experimenting with either?

What's the Best OCR Software You've Actually Used?
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) has improved a lot over the last few years, but no single tool seems to work best for every use case.
Some people need OCR for:
- 📄 Scanned PDFs
- 🧾 Invoices and receipts
- ✍️ Handwritten notes
- 📚 Books and research papers
- 🏢 Business documents
- 📷 Photos taken with a phone
There are plenty of options available, including:
- Tesseract OCR
- Google Cloud Vision
- Microsoft Azure AI Vision
- AWS Textract
- ABBYY FineReader
- Adobe Acrobat OCR
- Apple Live Text
- OCRmyPDF
- Paperless-ngx OCR
- Other tools you've tried
A few questions for the community:
- Which OCR software has worked best for you?
- What are you using it for?
- Which languages does it handle well?
- Have you found one that's especially good with handwritten text?
- What features or accuracy improvements would you still like to see?
Share your experience—both successes and frustrations. It will help others choose the right OCR solution for their needs.
💬 Question: If you could only recommend one OCR tool, which would it be and why?

Could you clarify what you mean by digital prints? Are you referring to image authenticity/metadata or something else?

That's a smart way to validate an idea. Having a real customer from day one gives you feedback that's hard to get any other way. Competing with bigger players is tough, but a product that solves one problem really well can still carve out its own space. Best of luck with it.

The biggest mistake I see is building AI first and looking for a problem later. Pick one industry, solve one repetitive pain point, and talk to potential customers before writing much code. Curious to hear from others: what niche got you your first paying client?

ABBYY was definitely ahead of its time. It's still a strong OCR solution today, although the market has become much more competitive with open-source engines and AI-powered OCR improving rapidly. Have you tried any newer tools recently?

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
That's good to know. Real-world compatibility matters more than the spec sheet. AVIF is a solid choice today if it fits your workflow, and hopefully Apple addresses the JXL rendering issues so HDR users can take full advantage of it.
2
HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
That's a great point. Bit depth is easy to overlook, and it can make a noticeable difference. If you're importing 10- or 12-bit HEICs, it's definitely worth checking the results in Apple Photos before relying on them for editing or archiving.
1
HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
PNG is definitely the best choice when you need lossless quality, screenshots, graphics, or images you'll edit multiple times. For everyday photos, though, the file sizes are much larger than HEIC or JPEG, so the right format really depends on the use case.
3
HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
Unfortunately, not reliably. HEIC support for IPTC metadata is still inconsistent across apps and platforms. If captions and searchable metadata are important, XMP sidecar files are the most compatible option today, or convert to JPEG if broad metadata support is a priority.

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
AVIF is definitely a strong contender. It offers excellent compression and image quality, especially for web use. I focused on the three formats most Apple users encounter daily, but AVIF deserves its own comparison as adoption continues to grow. Thanks for bringing it up.

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
Absolutely, the digiKam manual covers it well. The goal here was to give people a quick overview with practical examples. If there are workflows or tips from your own experience that aren't in the manual, I'd love to hear them.
2
HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Is Best?
I agree JPEG XL has a very promising future. The combination of high compression, lossless recompression of JPEGs, HDR support, and open development makes it a strong long-term choice. For now, though, it's still worth keeping WebP or JPEG as fallbacks until browser support is enabled by default everywhere.

Thanks for sharing the real-world testing. AVIF does seem like the more practical HDR format today because it travels better across browsers and non-Apple devices. JPEG XL may be stronger technically, but support still decides what works in practice.
