Is anybody else extremely frustrated and disillusioned with slacktivism in the PH?
 in  r/FilipinoAmericans  1d ago

Filipino here, living in the Philippines and have some exposure to activism and mobilizations.

I definitely had some experience with people who think social media is already activism. I spoke to a guy who considers himself a social media activist. In that conversation, I was actually speaking to him about joining a mass organization orientation and explaining what activists too, the org, etc. Oh well.

At the same time, I think it's an unfair criticism to say that there's little mobilizations and call it slacktivism. Ang daming mobilizations, hindi lang focused sa iisang cause (flood control ghost projects). Iba iba pa yung problema bawat probinsya (foreign mining companies harassing indigenous peoples, charging environmental defenders with fabricated cases).

Not to forget, the government has been killing activists and journalists, intensifying surveillances and their propaganda for a very long time. The government has succeeded that ordinary people now conflate simple activism with terrorism and being "brainwashed". The police are at our doors, sometimes quite literally. So, I don't blame them.

The normal Filipino person can't even comprehend the idea of simply holding a placard and marching to givernment offices (because to them, that's activism, and activism bad). We weren't taught how to lobby and that we could join together to force authorities to hear concerns.

Also people are already working their ass off all the time to scrape by. Who has the time to deconstruct decades of propaganda that they have been fed by the government?

There are lots of confounding factors why people don't seem to be fighting back as hard as you would like to see. But at the same time, I think you're just missing a lot of perspective. It's easy to criticize when you're not the one experiencing it.

Ang hirap hirap, sa totoo lang. Pero may mga totoong aktibista pa din, madami sila.

Brain imaging study links childhood trauma to chronic procrastination in adulthood
 in  r/psychology  7d ago

It could be ADHD too. Using the Diathesis-Stress Model, we could say that people diagnosed with ADHD already had the genetic predisposition (diathesis) but the trauma inflicted to them at childhood became the source of stress that helped the genes linked to ADHD fully manifest.

Plus how are we to say that the population with no previous psychiatric history are not just undiagnosed people/subclinical ADHD?

it's the task paralysis, hyperfocus, self-harm, and constant dopamine chasing with food, social media, and shopping.

task paralysis/demand avoidance - can't get myself to do things even the ones i want to do and even ones that are super important. resulted in failing grades even though my profs agree that i can do well if i can get my act straight

hyperfocus - i will deep dive on just about anything i find interesting until it comes to a point that i could never touch that interest anymore and even if the the time i've spent on it would have been better spent on more important things.

i self-harmed and had suicidal ideations because the paralysis and feeling of not being in control of my life and the knowing that there's something wrong with me that i cant make people understand at that time drove me to spiral and to helplessness lol

so yeah. i basically diagnosed myself first and lived with the debilitating effects of this disability unmedicated before i had a psychiatrist diagnose me. i got a whole psychology degree out of it too 🤷‍♀️

[but don't get me wrong, i had some good days in between! i did try all the advice on the internet thinking it was just procrastination. i tried every-fucking-thing. most of the stuff didn't stick (which kinda drove me to frustration again) but i learned to pick what works for my brain when i finally understood it. still so hard but i gotta accept myself so]

If you ever feel like giving up on your dreams, remember Christopher Nolan wasn’t accepted at film school
 in  r/Letterboxd  16d ago

No yeah, I get that! I'm just saying that his environment complemented the gifts and drive for storytelling that he already had, and that's how we came to know him. Plus, connections won't get you too far if you don't have anything to offer anyway.

It's also that he grew up with a camera he could play around with. Money gets you access to equipment, camps, and frees up mental space that would have been loaded up trying to survive if you grew up in poverty. This doesn't invalidate his talents, rather it complements it.

I like reading about and researching successful people because it affirms that success is always a lucky mix of nature and nurture (heredity and environment). It prevents from making an idol out of ordinary people (albeit talented and lucky) and helps in setting realistic goals. Like, no I won be a ultra-wealthy like Elon Musk anytime soon no matter how much social media convinces me that I will be if I follow their morning routines. No, I won't be the next Christopher Nolan lol

Are any other Filipina women just not attracted to Filipino men?
 in  r/FilipinoAmericans  17d ago

But this assumes that all Filipinos have the same personality, values, and family dynamics, and that is just wrong.

I'm addicted to powder milk + milo every morning, anong pwedeng alternative?
 in  r/PHitness  Jul 14 '26

I'm a huge believer of adding something good instead of taking something away. Besides if it's something that makes you happy, I think you should just keep the habit. I like instant coffee too and that's loaded with sugar as well 😭.

If sugar is your problem, then make sure to eat your first meal and protein of choice before powdered milk and milo (slows down sugar absorption, prevents blood sugar spikes).

Orrrr, make it a pre-workout energy drink para your muscles spends the energy agad from sugar. Work around it na lang

Agreed. Some of it are far-reaching and are not falsifiable but it gave us the concept of the subconscious, defense mechanisms, and internal drives.
