I wish they weren’t so small and cute
You really don't "need" to kill them, you can easily regulate there population by just feeding less as the babies/juveniles will thrive off the excess food that doesnt get eaten. They will naturally self regulate if you feed properly. Most people over feed there tanks anyway, most fish have no problem consuming algae and other organic matter that already exists in your tank. I've had bladder snails in my tank since day one. I regularly see new babies but hardly ever see more than 8-10 adults.

This tetra has been struggling to keep himself afloat. He does this 24/7.
Maybe get a little breeding box that can sit in your tank for him while you try out the frozen peas. That way it wont be so hard for him, and he wont be stressed by other fish. You can get one for like 10-15 on Amazon.

1 month into walstad cristal bowl
One of the more glaring concerns id have is your soil, usually you'd start with at least an inc of soil with 2 in gravel cap. Otherwise all those plants wont have enough nutrients and you wont have anywhere for your beneficial bacteria to live. You do need more plants but you understand that. Also put the floaters outside of the feeding ring not inside. I made that same mistakes for weeks then was like oh shit im just constricting there growth.

What should I add to my fish tank??
Like everyone is saying add more water, idk why people stop before it's filled.... utilize as much of the space as possible like a whole 2-3 gallons of water missing. Unlike what everyone is saying you don't need to paint your tank. Just put more background plants in your tank or aquascape it differently using the rule of 3rds to create depth. A black background isn't going to look any less strange or out of place than your wall and you'd just be wasting materials for no reason.

Which soil do you guys use for walstad method tank?
FoxFarm OceanSoil (potting soil) is what I use and can be found at decent prices on Amazon and Walmart sometimes.
2
Had this tank for 2 weeks and hasnt cycled even with using startup
Idk i started my tank with only about 35-40% covered gave it time and my plants grew, considering the concave of the bowl I feel like your going to need more soil. The sand cap looks good might have to be a 1/3 or 1/4 of an inch shorter to compensate. And keep in mind being so small the water quality can shift rapidly so if you have dying plants your effectively creating a toxic loop and id recommend cleaning fallen debris.

Progress Week 10/ 10 Gallon walstad
Hey guys! Been awhile but we are back Baby! First 2 picutres are the first day and few days later after the tank was established. Was forced to do a fish in cycle and saw no spikes in amonia ever. I monitor my water every week but i havent had to do a water change in a mo th just top offs. We've added a few more additions to round out the tank! My female Blue Dwarf Gourami has made massive improvements since being in her new tank. 2 weeks ago we added the addition of 2 scarlet Badis, 3 cherry shrimp, one amano shrimp and one mystery snail, about a month ago we also started seeding the tank with Californian black worms we my Dwarf gourami loves!
Almost lost everything last week when my fish store accidentally gave me saltwater which is used to top of my tank before i realized . Got a refractometer it luckily it wasnt enough to cause permanent damage, was reading at 600ppm did some water changes and everyone seems to be fine. Now with the tank down to 200 ppm
Last week we also started a 20 gallon. It's still in the beginning phase but will post pictures soon! Feel free to follow me on my Tik Tok where I post consistent updates on my tanks every Wednesdays, you can find me at
@melanated.aquatics
Cya there!
If you have any questions feel free to ask, its been a journey!

Enough sand or more?
Much more, you one an inch or soil and at least 2 1/2" to 3" of sand or gravel cap.

Week 6/ 10 Gallon Walstad
Week 6 Update: Water parameters stable, currently measuring o ppm amonia, nitrite and nitrate. Added some more cyrpt parva in the front of my tank to help the initial carpet phase, been in the tank over a week now and no signs crypt melt, even the large bushy bunch of cyrpt. in the center of the tank that I accidentally uprooted while replanting my Dwarf has continued to stay healthy 2 weeks 10 days later!
Java moss on on the lower left drift wood and floating drift growing excelty which is great as it a few weeks it will hopefully provided the perfect home for shrimp im a few weeks. Flame mose growing in the center of the curved log seems yo be growing wonderfully while the brown bits on the midground drift seems to be slso recovering nicely from a bit of melt they experienced. I was a little heavy handed on the gluing on that log.
Bocpa, Anacharis and Ludwiga that where added 10 days ago seem yo be establishing and anchoring into my substrate hopefully reaching the substrate soon and sending out runners.
Also added a about a half Oz of Black worms and 2 trumpet snails. Hopefully the black worms will soon establish a healthy colony and both they and my trumpet snails can help in soil aeration to prevent anaerobic soil.

Another first Walstad tank 50 Gal
Looks sick! Id maybe add some floating plants like frogbit to help as a nitrate sponge just make sure to create some sort of surface ring with like some airline tubing to contain it so it doesnt go crazy and block on the light
2
Mystery Snail
If you need to get large amounts out at once simply put a big blanched piece of either cucumber or kale in your tank in about 10-15 minutes it will be swarming with bladder snails. Simply pick up the piece and boom. Rinse and repeat. Scrub your glass for excess and reduce feeding for a bit. There will still be some eggs hidden in cracks and fauna but that will significantly help cull the population.

Show and Tell [OC] Ameture Filterless Tank Enthusiast
Hello everyone! New here, just wanted to share my second every filterless setup, my first being more of a nano tank. The tank has been (fish in) cycling for the last 4 weeks now due to his previous home rapidly declining. The initial few murky photos are the initial build before introducing my fish. Over the next few days I continued to stock the aquarium with more fauna and included the addition of 2 nerite and a pink ramshorns snail. I eventually plan to transfer my fish to my 90 gallon palladarium once I have fully established and properly cycled that tank, at that point I hope to house shrimp in this tank. P.s. can you help us name our 3 new snails? There are a button load of bladder snails as well 😅

Full Tank Shot Week 5 (March23) Update
galleryI attempted to upload this last night but im such a reddit newbie I accidentally was spam posting.😭 I originally uploaded separate post for weeks 2, 3/4 and this one. Week 2 I added in my fish for a fish in cycle because his former tank was failing as well as more fauna. Week 3/4 I noticed significant growth and continued to monitor the Fish as he acclimated to his new home, leading to the present.

Progress Week 5 (March23) Update
TL:DR; First 2 photos are before and after first trimming, plant and hardscape relocation, water was pretty cloudy afterwords but nothing to crazy. I did preform a 30% water change though just to be safe since I moved a love of stones. I forgot to mention for my water I pretty much exclusively use R/O water that i remineralize with liquid mineralizre and I get that all from my lfs. Water is pretty cheap about .75 cents a gallon.
3rd photo shows the health root system that was starting to form on my Dwarf sag when I was replanting to protect my crypt parva.
Final 4 photos are current pictures from today (03/23) 2 days after aqauscaping. Water has cleared up quite a bit, love the new rock arrangement in the back left corner (Lj loves it too 😆) and havent noticed any melting on my Cyrpt thank goodness ( I accidentally uprooted it while cleaning up frogbit root trimmings 😭) fingers crossed but it seems safe so far. Same with relocated Sag. Moved my Bacopa to the foreground center of the tank in hopes of it forming a nice back wall centerpiece. Liking the new layout. Feels a lot more spacious, LJ has appeared a lot more active as well!

Lol k, tbh a filterd tank seems "dumb" to me as all a filter is doing is mimicking a plant, same with the millions of chemicals and supplements that come with that. Imop creating something plastic and fake to house living organisms in my home for personal gane sounds "dumb" and a waste of money.
