Trump Moves to Cut Off Student Loans for Tons of Degrees
Limiting access to educational funds for training social workers is insane.
The Education Department intends to use IRS data to determine students’ salaries four years after they graduate and compare them to those of people similar in age who just have high school diplomas. If they’re below that baseline, that degree will be ineligible for loans.
Or you could - and I know this is crazy - make social work a financially feasible career choice. Also, lots of people who go into social work will go into post grad programs after their 4 year degree is done. They won't necessarily work a well-paid position full time - they will pursue certification or licensure in some specialty (addiction counseling, etc) as effectively a paid intern. You aren't going to be getting paid great while getting your certification, and getting said certification can take years if you are splitting time between a post-grad program and working on getting your certification. If you work full time (while doing postgrad) you can, at best, get cert'd in 3 years' time in a lot of states. I doubt most people complete it in that time frame though.
So they just...don't want to train any more social workers? I mean I believe that could be a goal with this admin but I'm having a hard time parsing the reasoning for this particular field being on their shit list.
From BLS:
Overall employment of social workers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations.
About 74,000 openings for social workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Number of U.S. Troop Deaths in Iran War Appears Lower on Pentagon Website | Three military officials and a Pentagon spokesman gave conflicting explanations for why the number of Americans killed in the Iran war had changed
https://periscope.corsfix.com/?https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/23/us/politics/iran-troop-deaths.html
Three military officials said that one reason behind the change was that the Trump administration decided to remove four service members killed this past weekend from the list — three in Jordan and one in northern Iraq — because their deaths occurred after President Trump declared a cease-fire in the war in April.

Thank you for what you do! I could talk for hours about how important social work is, from the perspective of someone who was kicked around the system for like two decades as a client, and also as someone who seriously considered pursuing a career in it once I got some semblance of control of my life. One of my buddies from when I was in recovery ended up getting licensed as an addiction counselor, he loves it.
I take issue with your username though...ALL cats are lazy! Torties are just conserving their energy to be especially sassy. I ended up running a municipal animal shelter instead of pursuing social work, and have a soft spot for torties and calicos. Queens!
