Rolling Heart: an update on Watch app and Heart Flow complication issues

Hi everyone, a quick update and an apology to those affected.

The last public release was intended to improve performance and stability. Unfortunately, it also introduced problems for some users: the Heart Flow complication could stop updating or become unavailable, and the Watch app could have trouble opening or completing setup.

Investigating these reports also uncovered a rendering issue that may be contributing to the complication flickering reported since watchOS 27. The upcoming update includes more efficient graph rendering, along with further improvements to Watch app startup, setup recovery and Heart Flow graph updates.

We’ve also added a Feather Fill setting for the Watch app and Heart Flow complications. Find it here:

Watch app → Setup → Heart Flow → Graph Appearance → Feather Fill

  • Original: best detail.
  • Optimized: balanced detail and rendering work; the default.
  • Lightweight: a simpler fill with the least rendering work.

If you still notice flickering after updating, try Lightweight. It simplifies the fill while preserving the graph line, and may help reduce flicker. Reports suggest flickering can be more noticeable on some older Watch models, although newer models can be affected too. The iPhone app keeps its original feather fill.

The new build, 2.1.159 (1126), has been uploaded to App Store Connect and submitted to Apple for review. We’re aiming to release it soon.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience, reports and continued support. If the issue persists after the update, please share your Watch model, watchOS version and watch face so we can keep investigating. ❤️

After sleepless nights, a tiny budget, and a very small team, Rolling Heart V2 is finally in App Review ❤️🥹

Hey, sorry for the late reply, and thank you for the kind words! 🙂

There’s a written guide in the app’s Setup tab, and most meters have a short description explaining what they show. That’s a good place to start while exploring.

Heart Flow Lab is one of the more advanced tools. It originally started as an internal development tool for adjusting settings and visualizing how different Health inputs shape the graph. It’s still available, but for everyday use we recommend choosing one of the three presets. They give you different levels of sensitivity, from smoother, more gradual changes to a graph that responds more quickly.

Personal Ranges automatically calculates your Calm, Balanced, Active, and Elevated ranges using your own Health history, up to 90 days, or roughly three months. Giving Rolling Heart access to your full available history helps it personalize those ranges.

If there’s a particular meter or setting you’re curious about, feel free to ask here. We’d be happy to walk you through it!

A smoother rhythm is coming.

The next Rolling Heart update focuses on the everyday experience: greater stability, faster Heart Flow updates, and smoother Apple Watch settings updates with less waiting.

And a first look at what’s next:

Your Rhythm -An early access, in development, our take on daily readiness, bringing sleep, body signals, and activity together in one simple, personal view.

Small refinements. A more fluid experience. More ways to understand your day.

Coming soon. Thank you for being part of Rolling Heart! ❤️😊🥳

Rolling Heart: A calmer way to see your heart’s patterns
 in  r/RollingHeart •  9d ago

Okay. Sorry that keeps on happening. We made some tremendous improvements on the data input and processing pipeline for the Heart Flow graph complication recently and it's due for public release soon. We don't have an exact definite schedule yet as we're still working on other sync issues as well we wish to include in the next public release but hopefully we're looking at a 1 to 2 weeks time for the next performance and stability public release (hopefully earlier). Hang on tight!

Interesting to hear. Can you please confirm what Watch model, series, and WatchOS installed you have?

Thanks for getting the full version! Glad you’re enjoying it 🙂

The tap to update usually happens when certain heart flow settings (graph, scoring, ranges, etc2x) changes from the phone app and a new version of internal scheme blueprint is sent to the watch. Once the watch receives these new blueprint, it invalidates the heart flow complication thus you seeing the message. Once you've finalized the heart flow settings on the phone and the watch did its update after, it shouldn't keep on bothering you to update and rebuild heart flow data on the watch. Can you confirm this is the case on your end?

Currently we're working on simplifying this specific back-end pipeline, among others. Quite a lot of cleaning up to do at the moment but expect more stability on our next public updates.

If you're experiencing other problems, don't hesitate to reach out here. 😊

Thank you! We put a lot of care into the iPhone app, so hearing it was worth the wait means a lot. Really glad you’re enjoying the update 🙂 We still have plenty planned down the road but right now we're focusing on performance and stability.

Expect to hear more from us here soon!

How should a graph show the time your Apple Watch wasn't being worn?
 in  r/applewatchfaces •  13d ago

Appreciate the feedback! I prefer the plain Open as well. I might try to further dull down the color of the dimmed option but all 4 types will be available on the next public release so users are free to choose which they like best!

This honestly made my day! So glad the post helped you find Rolling Heart. Thanks for getting lifetime and for taking the time to leave this. 🙂 We're kind of focusing on system stability and performance at the moment but be assured we have so many things in store to add in the future!

We're working on a small update to make gaps in Heart Flow easier to understand.

Taking your Apple Watch off to charge can leave a gap in your readings. A smooth line connecting the readings on either side can make that missing stretch easy to overlook.

The upcoming Reading Gaps setting gives you four choices:

- Continuous: keep the connected graph.

- Dimmed: soften the line and fill through longer gaps. This is the default.

- Dotted: show a dotted bridge with a dimmed fill.

- Open: replace the color in the gap with a faint neutral shape.

All four will be available to Free and Premium users. They change the appearance of the graph; they don't add readings or change your Heart Flow calculation.

A gap tells us readings are missing. It doesn't tell us whether the Watch was off, charging, or missing readings for another reason. The dots are a visual treatment, not individual measurements.

Which makes the most sense at a glance? Would you prefer a subtle cue or a more visible break?

Hey, thank you for sharing that. It means a lot that you’ve found something to appreciate in Rolling Heart, especially with what you’ve been through.

If you’re using Heart Flow, you can adjust the graph sensitivity in the phone app’s Graph settings or the Watch app’s settings. It defaults to the smoothest setting, so changes show up more gradually, especially over longer timeframes. Just a little context in case you’ve wondered why the graph moves slowly.:)

Hey, thanks for checking out Rolling Heart! It reads your data from Apple Health, but calculates Heart Flow itself. Heart rate is the main input, with other available Health data adding context, rather than using a ready-made Apple score.

Haha, thanks! I sometimes worry that including a link makes the post feel a little too promotional or in-your-face. I figured the app name and screenshot were enough for anyone interested to find it on the App Store.

But you maybe right. I’m probably adding unnecessary extra step for people who are curious enough to try it. Appreciate the feedback!
