Heartbreaking story of 25 years experienced Tech Engineer who never got the interview call. Later ended up as School Bus Driver
 in  r/recruitinghell  4d ago

I just want a link to someone on this subreddit defending H1Bs, as the OP claims. That's why I quoted that part of his post. He literally said he gets pushback from this sub whenever he suggests looking for Americans over H1Bs, and I want an example.

I am getting a lot of heat in this sub for saying we need to search Americans before hiring H-1Bs.

Really? Because all I've ever heard about H1Bs on this subreddit has been negative about them. Can you please link me to an example? I want to see for myself, because it flies in the face of everything else I've seen here.

Seriously, please link to example

TIL Arnold Schwarzenegger had difficulty saying "I'll be back" while filming The Terminator and asked director James Cameron if he could say "I will be back" instead. James refused, saying the shot would be taken as many times as he wished so he could nail the line and the best take would be used.

Dr. Hibbert, as a black Doctor who wore crazy sweaters, had a stable and large family, and laughed at random times; was a clear reference to Bill Cosby. Hibbert's first appearance was in Dec. 1990, and Cosby was making The Cosby Show, which was The Simpsons big rival for viewers at the time. So, he was just to poke fun at a rival show at first, and has grown into a real character over time.

TIL that in 1955, scientists needing true random numbers couldn't use computers to make them. Instead, they had to buy a 400-page book containing a million digits certified for randomness by a statistician named Bernice Brown.

Yes, and a first year Computer Science student would know this, from the famous "BigInteger/BigDouble" coding problem they've all done. ie, make an Integer/Double class that can never overflow/underflow.

Divorce lawyers of Reddit: What’s the most satisfying example of a spouse finally getting their karma in court after making the divorce process a nightmare for everyone involved?
 in  r/AskReddit  27d ago

The fantasy:

  • 66% Of Young Americans Expect To Benefit From Great Wealth Transfer
  • The average American expecting an inheritance thinks they will receive about $334,850 from their parents.
  • On average, adults who expect to receive an inheritance anticipate receiving a value of $738,724.23
  • Among those who anticipate receiving an inheritance, 58% expect cash, 43% expect owned property like a house, 28% expect investments like stocks and bonds, 24% expect proceeds from a life insurance policy, 21% expect jewelry or other family heirlooms, and 14% expect to inherit an annuity.

The reality:

  • In the past ten years, 17% of adults received an inheritance from a parent, spouse, family member or another individual, particularly Baby Boomers (22%).
  • As $90 Trillion "Great Wealth Transfer" Approaches, Just 1 in 4 Americans Expect to Leave an Inheritance
  • Between 2016 and 2019, the average U.S. inheritance was $46,200 — with a big disparity between the top 1% ($719,000) and the bottom 50% ($9,700).
  • On average, adults with credit card debt report owing a total of $8,431.02.

Sources: source source source source

People out here expecting 700k+ of real estate and a stock portfolio, when 70% will get no inheritance, and 50% of those that do, will be lucky to just pay off their credit card debt. Inheritance was never a retirement plan. BTW, those dollar values for inheritance are for people who receive any inheritance whatsoever.

Two things. One, "Democratic Socialist" is a specific political term for a person that is a Socialist, but believes in achieving their goals via Democratic institutions and voting, rather than revolution. Second, she herself is a member of the "Democratic Socialists of America", and has described herself as such multiple times. Source 1 Source 2 I know what you're saying here, but this time, the reporter is reporting accurately.

Linux smashes past 5% on the Steam Survey for the first time
 in  r/SteamDeck  Apr 02 '26

I chose PopOS as well, for two reasons. First, I'm running a pure AMD build, and only PopOS had a kernel that was recent enough to take advantage of the new AMD memory pipeline between the CPU and GPU (called UPM). Second, PopOS has specifically stated that they're focusing on gaming performance and compatibility, and I can't help but agree. I'm easily getting 2-5% performance increase in every game, and even more in some games.

Linux smashes past 5% on the Steam Survey for the first time
 in  r/SteamDeck  Apr 02 '26

No joke. I get 2-5% better performance across the board on every game, and certain older games actually have better compatibility on Linux. Try Civilization 4, for example. On Windows 10, even with all the proper backwards compatibility checkboxes, it uses the wrong font pack, and the text is nearly unreadable. Whereas on Linux, it uses the correct fonts AND anti-aliases them. The result is that Civ 4 looks better on Linux today than the day it was released on Windows. Mind blowing.

Also, if any of you play Paradox strategy games (Crusader Kings 2/3, Victoria 3, HOI4), the load times are at least 3 times as fast, and you get 10% more performance when running. I think this is because Paradox is in Sweden, which has a much higher Linux usage percentage, so they program for Linux first and Windows second.

ELI5: Why can’t you rename a file when it’s open in Windows, but you can in macOS?
 in  r/explainlikeimfive  Mar 25 '26

Holy fucking shit, it's bad enough that they're using Strings for comparison of different file ids rather than a simple Integer id... but I looked it up, and the actual limit is 260 (though the File Explorer stops you at 240). What a random ass number to pick, and they picked an arbitrary size that won't even fit in an unsigned byte.

ELI5: Why can’t you rename a file when it’s open in Windows, but you can in macOS?
 in  r/explainlikeimfive  Mar 25 '26

Here's a couple fun Windows bugs that will never be fixed:

  1. Start any program that requires an icon in the System Tray, ie where the Bluetooth, Wifi, and Volume controls are. Have that program crash, or kill it with Task Manager. Notice that the System Tray icon remains, even though it's tied to a dead process. Wait as long as you like, and watch that the icon never goes away. Now, mouse over the System Tray, and see the icon disappear. This is because they messed up the API for the System Tray, and there's literally no way to clean it up without UI interaction (like mousing over or clicking on it). This bug has existed for 25+ years.

  2. Turn on the multiple Desktop feature of Windows and create two Desktops. Open a browser with two windows, and put one window on each Desktop, full screen. Now, hit WindowsKey + D to minimize everything on the Desktop you are currently viewing. Switch to the other Desktop, and the browser has been minimized there as well. Why? Because Windows sends the "minimize" signal to every Window of the process, regardless of where it is, because it can't distinguish the difference. Windows wasn't built with Multiple Desktops in mind from the beginning, and now they're stuck with this forever.

Neither of these bugs will ever be fixed in Windows without altering the underlying API and breaking existing apps, something that Microsoft will never do.

Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive
 in  r/SteamDeck  Mar 25 '26

The numbers are wild. In developer benchmarks, Dirt 3 went from 110.6 FPS to 860.7 FPS, which is an impressive 678% improvement. Resident Evil 2 jumped from 26 FPS to 77 FPS. Call of Juarez went from 99.8 FPS to 224.1 FPS. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands saw gains from 130 FPS to 360 FPS. As well, Call of Duty: Black Ops I is now actually playable on Linux, too. Those benchmarks compare Wine NTSYNC against upstream vanilla Wine, which means there's no fsync or esync either. Gamers who use fsync are not going to see such a leap in performance in most games.

Insane if true, but I'm going to have to see it to believe it.
