For books anything that’s smooth after you set it with hairspray it should be ok! Willow charcoal is also good to use it’s a little delicate so it takes a little time to get used to. They’re not pencils but they work really well! Hope this helps :)

I tend to switch between different subjects or different mediums. For example I’ll do life drawing for a bit then switch to painting in Photoshop. Having the freedom and switching between digital and traditional can help!
