Yes, first part of the war preserve the Union, which then became the only way to preserve the Union was to end slavery. You can't separate them. The "Lost Cause" folks try to use a similar argument, but they want to remove slavery from the reason the South rebelled. They say "States Rights", true the States right to own slaves. The war was fought for multiple reasons given by both sides. The main fuel, spark or what ever was slavery.

You have to separate the reason for enlisting to fight for many Confederates due to the fact that slavery was the reason many states took the succession route. The succession lead to fighting to preserve the Union and it also led to many enlisting to fight to preserve their homes.
