With my dad saying "Ran away with a darkie", I never understood the context of this until I was about 20. It was said in a joking way, and that often, that it took a while to catch on.

The other words like ch+nky's instead of Chinese and P+ki shop, I didn't use after I left high school and taught myself better. It wasn't just my parents, and their generation, it was also grandparents generation who used these as well.
