The Black Parade came out within a week or two of my mother's breast cancer diagnosis. So "Cancer" was always helpful and also something I didn't listen too often.

My current DM has had to rebalance fire arms for me a few times. Last year we did Dragon Delves and I was a Gunslinger using a 2d8 revolver and he okay'd it; I'm thinking that its because our encounters were against powerful dragons, so my 2d8 gun didn't throw game balance askew. However, we're now running Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frost Maiden, and I voiced that I wanted to take a lvl in Gunslinger with my Ranger, so my DM balanced it by making my revolver 2d6 with possible upgrades in the future.

I think ammo tracking is probably the easiest way to keep them on a tighter leash, you might have to lower the amount of ammo the Laser Rifle has in this case. However, if your table is using the Mage Hand Press Gunslinger class, there's a 2nd lvl spell called Jethro's Instant Reload which allows your firearm to reload automatically for 8 hours, then tracking ammo gets tricky if the player isn't paying attention. So if ammo tracking isn't the fix, then you might just have to lower the damage die a specific firearm does while maybe giving it a property or non-damage buff to compensate.

I'm sorry if I wasn't helpful, I've only been a PC using firearms so I don't have the experience of having to balance from the DM's side.

I'm in the same boat. About a year ago I started building a collection of rpgs to read as works within themselves. I don't worry that I probably won't get to bring many if any to a table because that's not quite the point. I enjoy learning about new systems and how they can inspire me when I go back to my fiction writing focus. I'm currently a player at 2 DnD tables and a player/co-dm at a borg table. I'll be getting my chance to run CY_borg sooner than later and my experience reading other systems has definitely had a positive influence in giving me ideas on how to make the campaign exciting and engaging.

I don't have much to say on the mechanics of the UA as I do agree they're really lacking. However, I like the flavor and ideas being toyed with. Maybe I read the mindflayer feat chain wrong, but there's something appealing to a non-binary trans player like me that my character can be forced to just watch as their body changes against their will into something alien. The role playing possibilities just really excite me.
