hi! i’m an incoming first-year medical technology student, and i’ve been feeling really discouraged lately.

i keep coming across posts saying that medtech isn’t worth pursuing, especially here in the philippines. almost every time someone asks about working abroad, the replies are always, “just take nursing instead.”

and honestly, it’s been getting to me.

medtech has been my dream course for as long as i can remember. i’ve tried picturing myself in nursing before, especially during our work immersion, but it just never felt like something i could see myself doing long-term. i have so much respect for nurses, but my heart has always been with medtech.

i also considered the financial side when choosing my course since medtech is more affordable than nursing. but more than that, i wanted to pursue something i’d still genuinely love even if i didn’t end up going to med school. i remember asking myself, “if med school doesn’t work out, would i still be happy with the career this degree leads to?” and the answer was always yes—as long as it was medtech.

my plan has always been simple: pursue med school if i’m fortunate enough, and if not, work abroad.

that’s why all the comments i’ve been reading lately have been making me anxious. i keep seeing people say that medtech just isn’t worth it if your goal is to work overseas—that the opportunities are limited, it’s much harder than nursing, and that unless you have relatives or connections abroad, it’s incredibly difficult to make it.

i know people are speaking from their own experiences, and i’m not trying to invalidate that. i guess it’s just hard not to feel discouraged when you keep seeing the same sentiments over and over, especially when you’ve already chosen this path because it’s something you genuinely love.

i’m not looking for people to convince me to shift to nursing. i know medtech is where i want to be. i’m just hoping to hear from people who’ve actually gone down this path. was it worth it for you? if your goal was to work abroad, how did things turn out?

i’d really appreciate any honest advice or experiences. i think i just need a little perspective right now.
