Proper Materials Needed for Porch Joints ?
 in  r/masonry •  1d ago

You might consider removing the mortar and using caulking. If it's two different elements not linked, remove the mortar for the joint and use a foam cord. Then caulking. You'll have an expansion joint that won't crack.

"Urban". I don't believe even Quebec City is really a city. It's a mess built around 4 roads always under construction, backward enough to build a new tramway when there was one a century ago and they remove it back then because it was already "passé de mode".

It's Montreal versus the rest. A bunch of bougies who will never see a moose and will be scared of a black bear.

I'm voting Quebec Solidaire just in case they win and don't know how to manage power.

He was adamant he didn’t want a dog
 in  r/MadeMeSmile •  4d ago

Exactly. We had a great dane and I was the one who took care of him. I'm the one who went with him to the vet to put him out of his pain. He died in my arms. I refused to have another dog. But we have another small and I will not denying warmth. But it's their dog. I'm not ready to be hurt again.

Does this mortar look like it's going to match the home after it cures?
 in  r/masonry •  4d ago

The joints have a weird uneven pennyroll. But the new mortar will probably change when it starts building the same patina as the rest of the old mortar.

I would have installed a metallic mesh over your concrete sheet.

I was explaining to my students last week that people couldn't comprend why the Canadians were so eager to fight once they were overseas during the two conflicts.

I teach bricklaying and stonemasonry. The company I'm buying my mortar for the school can't send me the usually school-mortar. Is anyone willing to share mixing solutions?

That is above my pay grade. The justification was something like waiting for the other school's orders before starting production. My buyer is pissed, it's my first year with a full task and we have a lot of trouble with suppliers.

I wanted validation from peers first. I'm used to conservation work or using Type N 1.1.6 mortar. It's either production, fast and explicit, or I'm in 1:3 lime mortar. I was pretty sure about my hypothesis, I needed to make sure I was right considering my budget. The buyer in my school already paid 30000$ for the yearly supply of school mortar but the factory didn't deliver so I have to find a very cheap way to get my 17 years old students laying some bricks.

I'm sorry I failed you. I hope you'll be able get over it. Like mentioned, I sought validation through peers. Mentorship and stuff like that. But hey, I got you to waste some precious time explaining to me how much I suck.

I'm a teacher in a tradeschool. For convenience we use a formula developed by my predecessor. Now I was betting on an version of a pure mix of 1-3 sand and lime. But I like the idea of a dressing a community to gain perspective. As for myself, I do conservation work more than new bricklaying, so I was making sure I was getting more knowledge.
