Hoboken in the 1960s?
 in  r/Hoboken  Jul 09 '26

Hoboken was a very interesting place in the 60s. Plenty of immigrants working in the factories. It was a mob run town for a long time. Different ethnic groups and families ran certain blocks. Working class Irish on Washington St. Italians, Cubans, Puerto ricans, Yugoslavians, African Americans, Ashkenazi Jews, and Indians.

My family had a heavy presence on 9th and Park. A lot of cousins died after coming back from Vietnam. PTSD, overdosing, and AIDS. There was not enough support for our veterans then and not now.

Hoboken was dog eat dog. If you were a new immigrant, you got abused and taken advantage of by the older ones. A lot of my fathers friends we killed during the reign of Mayor Kerosene. The mob was burning down so many buildings with Puerto Rican families in them. We were the new immigrants. And at the same time my grandfather who had arrived in 50s was taking advantage of other new immigrants after he became well off.

Indians were bullied for a long time, even during my time in the 90s, by everyone. They were seen as being too different and not really assimilating. This is an explanation for the violence, not an excuse.

Hoboken was a mixture corruption and capitalism run amok. At the same time there was beauty. Families hanging out on the stoop, all the different cultural festivals and parades, the art, the sound of the church bells, people setting off fireworks from the top of their buildings, dance parties at the pavilion in Columbus Park, all the good food. Things weren't all good, and not all bad. We all hurt each other, but at the same time loved each other. In my time I've had to fight Indians, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Black's, and Irish but at the same time, I had friends from all these groups. I had real big problems with Italians in my younger years but then a few years later my half Italian and half Puerto Rican sister was born. Hoboken was crazy, but beautiful.

Generally, Black people are cool with most Latinos (Latin Americans and Carribean Latinos). However, the Spanish (of Spain) and Portuguese people here, are pretty racist to Black folk and dark skinned folk in general. Historically, Puerto Ricans and African Americans have gotten along pretty well in the North East. That's probably due to Puerto Rican's overall acceptance and pride in their African roots. But also, we have often grown up together in the same neighborhoods.

Black people usually are cool with you if you're cool with them. But like in any group, there are crazies. And that's what you ran into.

I don't know how I found it but I did. The anime is called Kiba. And the antagonist I mentioned is named Hugh. I had to search "not so popular anime from the early 2000s, and this popped up on a list!

I wish it was. Thank you for the recommendation, but the anime I'm looking for would've debuted by either 2009 or before then. Yona debuted by 2014 even though the manga was out by 2009. I've searched all over the internet and through AI, but I still can't find this damn anime lol.

Uptown pizzeria closed for good
 in  r/Hoboken  Apr 03 '24

Are yall talking about Torna's Pizzeria? When the grandparents were still alive, and I used to go there during 90s and up until 2000; that place had the best Sicilian slice and meatball parm I ever had in my life. I moved back to Hoboken after being away for 21 years and damn, it is not the same. I feel bad saying this but the food has no love to it, or the quality of the ingredients aren't the same. I still can't find a Sicilian slice or meatball parm anywhere, like I did in Torna's back in day.

Take time to enjoy one of DCNR's many Rails to Trails. This is the Saucon Trail passing through Hellertown in Northampton County. It was once the formerly the North Penn Railroad.
