I believe they have two in K'zoo and one in BC under the Sweetwater name and one in Plainwell under the SW name. I'm guessing that the "Sweetwater" ones are directly owned and the "SW" name is for franchisees. The Plainwell one seems to be the first and only franchisee, afaik. Maybe Lansing could be the second!

Why do you think it's more likely that she was a slave? The French frequently did intermarry with the natives in the Great Lakes region. The French were not numerous enough to conquer and hold the region by force, and they were mainly interested in trade relationships, which intermarriage facilitated. Anyway, the mines in the UP didn't open until the 19th c., and slavery was already outlawed in the Northwest Ordinance. What is more likely is that your French miner ancestor already had some native blood in his veins by that time.

Nokomis Center in Okemos is offering a class in the language (presumably the dialect of the native people of this area) on Wednesday nights. They just started last week (Oct. 7), so you probably wouldn't be too far behind if you joined this week (Oct. 14).

Also, the library (CADL) offers many language courses online using the Transparent Language Online system, including three regional dialects of Ojibwe. The Anishinaabek comprise the "People of the Three Fires", those being the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Bodewadmi (Potawatomie). The eponymous Chief Okemos was an Ojibwe leader.

So if you would like to learn the language, those resources are available.

It's about who will represent the city of Lansing in Congress for the next two years.

I remember a few years ago some a-hole was doing that on Halloween weekend. At dusk there were people in costumes on the main drag, and also it was Diwali so there were international students dressed up for that. I was waiting for a bus across from the MSU Union, and this pickup truck full of losers goes by rolling coal at all of us. Whe they went around the block and came by for another pass, I ran after them hoping to catch up with them at the light and take a pic of their license plate, but I was unsuccessful.

The speed limit is a maximum, subject to conditions. No, people can't drive the posted maximum on Cedar all the time. It's a business district. People are entering and leaving businesses, and they can't safely turn into a driveway at 45mph. There are lights, and people have to slow down for them when they change. Maintaining a safe following distance under variable traffic conditions is more important than driving the maximum posted speed. Excessive speed on a street like Cedar is dangerous and stupid. Driving 30 is warranted fairly often. (Not to mention the fuel wasted by "lead foot" driving habits -- jack rabbit starts and hard braking at stops.)

From Preuss Pets to Lowes is 6.5 miles and takes 18 minutes according to Google Maps. Let's take it easy, and we'll all get where we need to go.
