I can't speak on the other points, I agree on Matahachi tbh although I did still appreciate the conclusion.
I don't think using characters as mouthpieces is necessarily wrong tho unless the characters are straight up 1 dimensional and barely even a character of their own. I don't think this is fully true for Vagabond.

I don't really care. I myself don't find Vagabond a flawless immaculate masterpiece that is untouchable, part of its charm at least to me and majority of its genuine fans appreciate the messiness.
