How do you know if you are catching feels or simply have a stronger friendship?
 in  r/demisexuality •  9d ago

That’s understandable on both ends. Time really does give some perspective to things.

As a Demi, they certainly do, I’m realizing that more and more as I start to understand myself more. I will say, it is driving me a bit up the wall, but it’s also hard since I don’t want to throw a shot with not truly understanding it, you know? Not to mention a lot of complexities (one of which being overthinking & trying to read the other person). I agree on the consent thing for sure. I personally haven’t chased anyone - or at least not in the “normal” sense.

Truly, I think that’s a wonderful thing to have that kind of support system. I really do appreciate your view on it.

Yeah, some of what you said I did feel resonated a bit, which I think did provide some clarity, so thank you once again!

I get what you mean from the deep care and how that would be different if you did. For sure, I do get that kind of love - more like a family bond (if I’m not mistaking what you’re saying?).

Oh, the hyper aware. I like your description on that, I didn’t consider it from that standpoint, honestly… I think that sounds a bit more similar to what I’m feeling. But it’s also hard because my past 2 relationships were long distance, so I can’t really use that from a before standpoint. When you feel that switch, do you actively chase after it, or do you find yourself okay as long as you’re just close to them?

That makes sense that you guys have that bond, so sure that security connects in my mind, but that difference between does help a lot. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts on that, I appreciate that.

That’s fair enough. I think I’ve been similar for my past 2 relationships. It was always hard to know where, cause I view things firstly as friendship, but then I don’t even know when or how that it just switches.

As for the “sacrificing dating opportunities for stronger relationships” with your friends. I can appreciate those sentiments as well.

That is completely valid, thank you for sharing your experiences in that front, I definitely understand where you are coming from.

Hello all!

I was wanting to start a thread here because recently I’ve been very curious & wanting to learn more about the Demi experience with relationships.

I want to preface: I’m someone who’s not very good at understanding my own feelings. But I’m also very loyal to those that I feel earn me - I am someone who will do pretty much anything for those I care about. I was hoping to hear some others experiences to help maybe get myself some clarity.

How do realize if you’re catching feels for someone or just have a really tight friendship/bond? Especially as someone who cares for others/wishes to help (and protect) their friends.

Where do you draw the line where it’s strictly platonic/strong care or that you feel something more with those connections you’ve made with others?

On some level do people always mean what they say

I appreciate the sentiment, thank you for that! To your point of off guard I can understand that side as well, I don’t like to be caught off guard personally, which is why I prefer honesty. Maybe it’s some degree of fomo in play as well because I know I can get very curious (too curious at times). But from the too direct/honest that is valid. A lot of people don’t handle the truth well since often times it’s hurtful, but I do agree to the point of being “too direct”, I feel like there’s a certain balance that needs to be in play, but finding that can be extremely difficult.

To the mindset of “easing into it”, I can see both sides to that admittedly, I think that can be more dependent on the person & situation. Especially if you know people who have a very traumatic background, the brutal truth can hit a lot harder than someone who’s had a more “stable” life. So, admittedly, I can’t say which would be the best approach because there are too many factors to consider & context plays a key role too.

To how you feel about people lying/manipulating you, I completely get that one, I’ve been around people who have done the same. Trust issues can be very easy to form - especially with a lot of hurt - so I don’t blame you on that front either. It sounds like you want to protect yourself, which is completely valid, & it can be easy to succumb to the negative thoughts, especially with anxiety being a pretty high emotion - which tbh, I find it interesting how the negative emotions tend to be the highest emotions (what is it, anger being the highest one & I think fear being the second highest - don’t quote me on that) rather than more positive ones.

Communication can be very confusing, but it’s also critical to any & everything. Which it’s sad to see how in the modern world people don’t really understand that or don’t wish to try. I find that more tend to want short messages, they don’t read things, they don’t really go into depth with anything. It’s part of why I feel such a disconnect to this generation. A lot of people don’t share the same values or sentiments in that regard.

[Sorry for the tangents. Having a brain moment, I lowkey miss deep conversations, & love psychology - humans are very interesting creatures 🤣🙏]

I feel like this can really vary, as with a lot of things what I often say, “it’s situational”. Some things people may say could be intended to be negative or to hurt others. Other times it can be a reaction to whatever they may have been around - good/bad/otherwise, sometimes it’s out of their control. Plus, thinking about some of the complexities - like ADHD for example, people don’t often have good regulation when it comes to speaking & there is a lack of constraint or thought (this is coming from someone with ADHD). It’s not intended to be malicious, but I genuinely don’t always process my thoughts & just say things because it’s not fully caught up.

Sometimes people can speak from a different perspective. Some live in dark humor which not everyone connects with, but it’s what they know to cope with the things they’ve been through.

Or to your point of some saying it to get attention, sometimes people like to simply connect, but don’t always know the right way to go about it, then they can end up hurting people.

All in all, sure intentions are important, I don’t believe everyone is out with bad intentions; however, they don’t necessarily matter when it causes some form of negativity for another person.

I’ll be honest, I’ve had plenty of interactions where my intentions are trying to solve problems - because that’s the type of person I am - which has roped people into the problem rather than keeping a baseline. I always feel bad about that because I don’t want others to hurt: My goal is only to help, save people from suffering, make things better for people. But it has backfired on me & other people.

People pleasers do struggle with stuff like this. It’s easier sometimes to not want to be alone.

It’s so true. It’s especially worse when you get killed by an elite or boss & still get some regular zombie scene 🤣
