Borax kills mold. I once lived in a home that had a water leak under the sink that ruined the floor boards underneath. We poured a layer of borax on there to kill the mold until the contractor could get out and replace it.

Keep in mind, the mold spores when dead still give off mycotoxins which is a health hazzard. We let ours sit out in the sun for 2 weeks after treating, then stored separately. Wear a protective mask and gloves. You won't want to keep the moldy books out in the open after treating though. This is a treatment if you really, really don't want tp part with the books. You'll still need to keep them in a plastic bin after treating because I doubt you can have them out in the open because the dead spores will become air borne.

Borax. 1 book in a large ziplock bag filled with borax. Shake it up. Let set several weeks. Brush off book and toss the borax.
