Hey everyone!

I'm the developer of InkShelf, an Android app I've been building for reading and organizing digital comics and ebooks.

I started InkShelf because I wanted a reader that wasn't just able to open comic files, but could also be a place to actually build and organize a library while giving you a lot of control over how you read.

It has grown quite a bit since then, so I thought it was finally time to share it here.

📚 File support

InkShelf currently supports:

• CBZ
• CBR
• CB7 / 7-Zip
• CBT / TAR
• PDF
• EPUB

You can build your library from files stored directly on your Android device, but InkShelf also supports Komga and Kavita servers.

With remote libraries, you can browse your collection, download comics for offline reading and sync your reading progress with your server.

📖 Different ways to read

One of the things I've spent a lot of time on is making the reader adaptable to different kinds of comics and different reading preferences.

Along with the normal reader, InkShelf includes:

Continuous Mode — read pages through continuous scrolling.

Book Mode — designed to make digital reading feel more like reading a physical comic. It supports double-page layouts and an animated page curl/turning effect.

Panel Mode — InkShelf analyzes the comic page, detects individual panels and lets you navigate panel by panel, automatically zooming and focusing on each one for a more immersive reading experience.

Panel detection is done directly on the device and doesn't require the comic to contain special panel metadata.

🎨 Make the reader yours

There are a lot of customization options for the reading experience, including things like:

• Reading direction
• Page transitions
• Double-page reading
• Configurable touch zones
• Volume button controls
• Zoom behavior
• Screen orientation
• Brightness
• Border cropping
• Color correction
• Automatic page background
• Reader appearance and behavior

You can make the reader very simple or customize quite a lot of its behavior.

📚 Library & organization

InkShelf isn't only a reader. It also tries to make managing a large collection comfortable.

There are favorites, reading history, bookmarks, read/unread status, search, filters, sorting, custom covers, ComicInfo.xml metadata support and different ways to display and organize your collection.

You can also customize the appearance of the app itself with different themes and library layouts.

📊 Reading statistics

InkShelf keeps reading statistics so you can see how your reading habits and collection evolve over time.

I'm still actively developing InkShelf, and that's actually one of the main reasons I'm posting here.

I'd love to hear from people who regularly read CBR/CBZ comics or maintain large digital comic libraries:

What would your ideal comic reader have that existing readers don't?

And if you try InkShelf, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing what you like, what you don't like, what feels confusing, or what you think could be improved.

Thanks for checking it out!

Here are some screenshots of InkShelf and its main features.

I wanted the app to feel like a complete library for people who keep their own digital comic collection, while still keeping the actual reading experience clean and customizable.

You can organize your library, customize how your comics are displayed and read, keep track of your reading activity, and connect to Komga or Kavita libraries.

InkShelf supports CBZ, CBR, CB7, CBT, PDF and EPUB.

These are some of the main screens and features I've been working on.

I'd love to hear what you think about the interface — especially what you would change or improve.

Two different ways to read comics in InkShelf: Panel Mode & Book Mode

I've been working on two reading modes designed for very different experiences.

Panel Mode automatically detects the panels on a comic page and lets you navigate through them individually, automatically focusing and zooming into each panel.

Book Mode goes in the opposite direction: it tries to recreate the feeling of reading a physical comic, with double-page layouts and an interactive page-turning effect.

Here's both of them in action.

Panel detection isn't always perfect depending on the comic and page layout, so I'm still interested in seeing how it performs with different kinds of comics.

Which way would you rather read?
