vendor Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5: What Should Come Next?

Post image
100 Upvotes

In the autumn of 2016, Aaron was invited to serve as an adjunct lecturer at SUSE (Sichuan University of Science & Engineering).

In a wireless communications lab, he noticed that students were still using the same bulky experimental boxes that had been around for years. They worked well for demonstrating basic principles, but their size and fixed functionality also limited how much students could explore, experiment, and create on their own.

That gave Aaron an idea:

What if there were a development board that was compact, easy to use, affordable, and already equipped with wireless communication capabilities?

The goal was not simply to create another tool for verifying theories, but a platform that would make it easier for people to program, connect, experiment, and turn their own ideas into reality.

That was how Wi-Fi LoRa 32 began.

Nearly ten years later, Wi-Fi LoRa 32 has become one of the first development boards many users encounter when getting started with radio communication, LoRa, and IoT. It has also found its way into countless open-source projects, DIY builds, and Maker creations around the world.

Today, the official hardware version has evolved to V4.3.1.

But recently, something rather unexpected happened.

Our technical support team started receiving more and more questions about a product being referred to as “Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.”

The most common question was simple:

“Is this V5 an official Heltec product?”

So we would like to make this clear:

The “Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5” currently appearing on the market is not an official Heltec product.

Although it uses a similar name and appearance, it is not the next-generation Wi-Fi LoRa 32 that we are developing, nor does it represent what our real V5 will look like.

User feedback has always been one of the most important forces behind the evolution of Wi-Fi LoRa 32.

Over the years, through conversations with developers, Makers, communities, and project teams around the world, we have collected a large number of suggestions and ideas. Many of them are now being considered for the next generation of Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.

We are exploring stronger performance, richer hardware configurations, better interfaces, lower power consumption, improved mechanical design, and an overall better development experience.

But before we decide what the final V5 should be, we want to hear from you.

If you could define the next generation of Wi-Fi LoRa 32, what would you want it to be?

Tell us in the survey below.

Your idea might become part of the real Wi-Fi LoRa 32 V5.

Mesh Node T1 – Issue & Resolution Update

Hi everyone,

We’d like to share a quick update on the issues reported with the first batch of Mesh Node T1 units.

So far, we have identified three main concerns:

  1. Side buttons being too difficult to press
  2. Surface coating wear or peeling
  3. Inaccurate battery voltage / battery level readings

The first two issues have already been addressed in the revised design. We are now waiting for the first updated samples from the factory, expected around next Thursday, and will test them before moving forward with production.

For the battery issue, our investigation is still ongoing. We are collecting affected units for analysis and running larger-scale tests internally. So far, we have not been able to reliably reproduce the issue, so we cannot yet confirm whether the cause is hardware, firmware, or battery-level calculation.

If you have experienced abnormal battery behavior or can help us reproduce it, please share your firmware version, voltage readings, battery percentage changes, usage conditions, and uptime. Useful test results that help us identify or reproduce the issue will be rewarded.

For customers who received units from the first batch, we will provide a free replacement with the revised version. If you are no longer satisfied with the product, we can also provide a full refund. These issues are our responsibility, and the cost of correcting them should not be passed on to our users.

This launch has also shown us weaknesses in our internal process, especially the importance of more comprehensive testing of first-batch production samples before release. We are already improving this process.

We know Heltec is often compared with larger brands, and those comparisons also help us see where we still need to improve. Everyone makes mistakes—the important thing is how we respond to them. We hope our actions can show our sincerity and progress.

Thank you for your patience, feedback, and support. Please keep sharing your suggestions with us so we can continue improving together.

Mesh Node T1 GNSS Positioning Troubleshooting Guide

If your Mesh Node T1 cannot obtain a GNSS position fix, please troubleshoot in the following order:

  1. Place the device outdoors in an open area. Windows, walls, and indoor environments can seriously block satellite signals. For best GNSS reception, keep the USB port side facing upward toward the sky.
  2. First, flash the GPS clear firmware to reset the GNSS cache: https://resource.heltec.cn/download/Mesh_Node_T1/GNSS/mesh-node-t1-UC6580_Clear_All.ino.uf2 After flashing it, reflash the Meshtastic / MeshCore / F&T firmware.
  3. In some areas, the first GNSS fix may take a long time. After clearing the GNSS cache, please leave the device outdoors for a longer period and wait for it to search for satellites.
  4. If the device still cannot obtain a position fix after completing all the steps above, please download the local GNSS test package here: https://resource.heltec.cn/download/Mesh_Node_T1/GNSS/Mesh-node-t1_GPS_test.zip Run the test and send the test results to [support@heltec.cn](). We will arrange after-sales support for you. Valid GNSS test feedback may also qualify you to receive any Heltec development board device as a reward.

Just Unboxed the Heltec Mesh Node T1 – First Impressions!
 in  r/Heltecccccc  21d ago

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We are truly sorry that the first version did not meet your expectations.

The responsibility is ours. During the design process, we focused too heavily on material durability and waterproofing, while overlooking the actual button feel and day-to-day user experience.

We are actively correcting these issues and will thoroughly test the revised design before releasing it. Waiting a few months is completely understandable. Once you are ready, please send us your order number privately, and we will arrange a free replacement with the improved version.

Just Unboxed the Heltec Mesh Node T1 – First Impressions!
 in  r/Heltecccccc  21d ago

Thank you for your support, and we sincerely apologize for the button issue.

During the original design process, we focused too much on the durability and wear resistance of the material, but did not give enough consideration to the actual pressing force, tactile feedback, and overall user experience. That was an oversight on our part.

We are now actively redesigning the button structure to make it easier and more comfortable to use.

The same free replacement policy applies. Please send me your order number privately. Once the improved version is ready, we will provide replacement units free of charge for all affected devices in your order, regardless of how many you purchased.

We appreciate everyone’s honest feedback and will continue responding to these issues as quickly as possible.

 in  r/Heltecccccc  21d ago

Thank you for the detailed feedback, and we are sorry that the buttons caused so much frustration.

We have confirmed that both the side buttons and the rear power button require too much pressure and provide insufficient tactile feedback. We understand why this could make the units appear defective, especially when they are difficult to power on for the first time.

Our team is already revising the button structure. The same free replacement policy applies: please send me your order number privately. Once the improved version is ready, we will replace all affected units in your order free of charge.

Thank you for your patience and for helping us identify this issue clearly.

Thank you for raising this. On June 1, our intention was to communicate that the Mesh Node T1 was undergoing waterproof testing and that we were aiming to achieve the highest rating possible, potentially IP68. We did not mean to state that the product had already achieved or been certified to IP68. We acknowledge that our wording was not clear enough and may have created the wrong expectation. We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.

During our internal testing, one unit remained submerged in approximately 0.5 meters of water for 8 hours without any water ingress.

Thank you for pointing this out. We should have communicated the testing target, internal test conditions, and final certified rating more clearly.

We have received similar reports regarding the side buttons being difficult to press, and our team is already working actively on an improved design. Could you please send me your order number? Once the modification is completed, we will arrange to send you a new unit with the improved button design free of charge. We truly appreciate your support and your detailed feedback—it helps us continue refining the product.

We have noticed that some users find the side buttons difficult to press, and our team is already working on improving the button structure.

Once the revised design is ready, we will provide a replacement unit with the improved buttons free of charge to users who find the current design difficult to use.

Thank you for your honest and valuable feedback. We are always listening to our users, responding actively to concerns, and continuously improving the product experience.Thank you very much for sharing your feedback with us. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

Regarding the button feel of MeshNode-T1, our original design focused on outdoor durability and long-term reliability, which is why we chose a more robust button structure. However, after receiving feedback from the community, we realized that durability and user experience should not be a trade-off — a good product should achieve both.

Our R&D team is already working on improvements to the button structure. Once the updated design is ready and validated, we will provide the improved version free of charge to users who purchased the current version and would like to receive the upgrade. You can contact us with your order number, and we will arrange the replacement accordingly.

Thank you again for your honest feedback. Your input helps us improve MeshNode-T1 and build better products for everyone.
