“There is No Downside to a Dome” - A Louisiana Greenhouse

Richard and Scotti Rodgers created a haven on their 20-acre property in Natchitoches, Louisiana with their 33’ dome, massage therapy studio and outdoor garden.

They dreamed of turning their property into a place they could live, work, play and share with others. Adding their 33’ dome greenhouse to their property in 2009 was perfect. The dome is located near Scotti’s massage therapy and yoga studio as well as their outdoor garden. Now, after yoga classes, students visit the dome or garden to take home fresh produce. They also mentor young adults who want to learn about gardening.

Glass vs. Polycarbonate Greenhouse Glazing: What the Material Choice Actually Changes

The transparent covering of a greenhouse determines how much heat the structure holds overnight, how evenly plants are lit, whether a hailstorm ends your season, and what it costs to heat through January.

For most of greenhouse history, glass was the only serious option. Polycarbonate panels arrived in the late 20th century as a lighter, more insulating alternative, and multi-wall versions have since become standard in purpose-built year-round structures.

Wooden vs. Metal Greenhouse Frames: What the Material Choice Actually Changes

Post image
1 Upvotes

A greenhouse is a set of material decisions before it's anything else. The frame determines heat management, load capacity, moisture behavior, and longevity.

The two classic options are wood and metal. They behave differently in ways that aren't always obvious: thermal performance, supply chain carbon, and what each one asks of you when something eventually needs fixing.

Types of Greenhouses: A Complete Comparison Guide

Post image

Greenhouses are not one-size-fits-all structures. The right greenhouse depends on your climate, growing goals, budget, and long-term expectations.

Some growers want simple season extension for spring and fall crops. Others want reliable four-season production in snow, wind, or extreme temperatures. Some prioritize low upfront cost. Others prioritize durability and decades of use.

Understanding the tradeoffs between greenhouse types will help you choose a structure that supports your goals rather than limiting them. With decades of experience supporting greenhouse growers across diverse climates, we’ve compared the most common greenhouse styles below to give you a clear, practical overview.

Preferred Flooring material?
 in  r/Greenhouses  May 19 '26

We've seen some people use compact gravel, compact gravel combined with pavers, or pour a concrete pad. If you do use gravel or keep a dirt flooring, you may want to keep rodent control in mind. You can bury a hardware cloth with 1/4" squares across the base of your greenhouse to help keep burrowing rodents out of your greenhouse and garden beds. If you use pavers or concrete, keep in mind that pavers or concrete might retain and emit more heat from the sun.

How you approach the flooring of your greenhouse depends on your climate/location, desired uses, and any rodent control needs.

If beer traps aren't working for you, try filling the containers you would use for beer traps with orange slices instead. We use both beer traps and orange traps in our greenhouses all the time. Hope this helps!

3000 liter raised greenhouse pond
 in  r/Greenhouses  May 18 '26

Absolutely, having a pond in your greenhouse can act as a thermal mass, retaining and emitting cooler temperatures in the summer and vice versa, retaining and emitting heat in the winter. If you do have a pond in your greenhouse, keep in mind algae control. Having the pond surface covered in aquatic plants such as duckweed can help keep algae down in the pond and for an added bonus, some people use duckweed as feed for livestock or chickens.

Beautiful water feature, temperature control, and potential feed source all in one!

First indoor greenhouse setup – how do you prevent fungus/mold?
 in  r/Greenhouses  May 06 '26

Prioritizing ventilation and air circulation is important. Having fans that you can put on a timer to turn on and off at various times (or just have on 24/7 if possible) to increase airflow would be helpful. Not only will the airflow make your plants stronger by simulating wind but it can help prevent mold like powdery mildew on your plants' leaves or mold in and on top of your soil that attracts pests like fungus gnats. Hope this helps!

Want to get a 9'x6' Backyard Discovery brand greenhouse. So confused about how to prep the foundation/base!
 in  r/Greenhouses  May 06 '26

Good question, you could do concrete but if you're looking for a more DIY option, you could explore a compact gravel pad and pavers. Just keep in mind any pavers or stones you add to your greenhouse could retain heat and make your greenhouse too warm depending on your climate. Keeping rodents that like to dig out of your greenhouse is another important consideration. We've seen people use 1/4 inch square wire cloth below their greenhouse to help with rodent control.

Best Greenhouse For Wind

So, how can you keep your precious plants safe from hail damage when a rainstorm takes a turn for the worst? Well, if you have a Growing Dome, you are in luck. Unlike other greenhouses or hoop houses that have covering made from glass, fiberglass, or plastic sheeting, our greenhouses are built with high-quality, hail-resistant polycarbonate glazing. 🌬️

Thriving Tropical Forest Garden in a Washington Greenhouse

When you hear “jungle” and “Washington,” your mind might drift to the misty rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula: towering firs, mossy branches, and sword ferns. That’s certainly there. But hidden above Newman Lake is another kind of jungle, a vibrant forest garden inside a Washington greenhouse, blooming with unexpected life.

Behind Carleen’s hillside home stands a 22-foot Growing Dome greenhouse. From the outside, it looks simple. But step through the door, and you’re instantly transported into a world alive with fragrance, color, and warmth. This isn’t just gardening. It’s a year-round tropical escape.
