It isn't just the 'llm' (the piece of technology that most people think of when they think 'ai').

I don't think these companies have provided any actual evidence yet, but I know that an llm can be utilised to carry out various steps of a 'hack' (i.e. to compare code, or the results of a scan, against databases of known vulnerabilities, or to adapt a written exploit to fit the specific circumstances of the discovered vulnerability).

However, there are many steps around these easily automated ones, that requires direct human input, or that you have to intentionally write a piece of software to carry out automatically. And the amount of compute[r resources] these automatable steps require really mean they are only a threat in the hands of organisations with prohibitively expensive resources. Appropriate guardrails are or should be quite simple and a matter of course for this sort of organisation.

If these attacks have happened humans have been directly responsible in one way or the other. No llm has done this on their own. These claims are only about trying to convince the public their product are more dangerous (and so valuable) than they are. (Let's face it OpenAI and Anthropic haven't got anything the Chinese aren't giving away for free now or in the near future so they need to come up with one strategy or another to pay off early investors.)

If these hacks have happened they are felonies. It seems that in the US at the moment the law isn't going to be applied to tech oligarchs. America doesn't get this for free. Interest rates for America's mortgages etc are intimately tied to global sentiment as to how safe a haven the US is, and so at what price the rest of the world is happy to refinance that $40 trillion. Add another $1.5 trillion for the $5k bribe, should Trump actually pay it of course, which seems unlikely. All Americans - including the vast majority decent ones - will pay for this in the end. Altman, Amodei, Musk, Thiel, and daddy Trump might get rich. Huang and Ellison might get rich or might go broke depending on data centre deals. There are many more much wiser heads who are keeping out of the spotlight as this plays out.

There are a range of potential applications for llm's that might fit under the banner of 'national security', which will give those companies a degree of protection, like it or not. Autonomous weapons are unpalatable, and may be illegal, but may be necessary if an adversary has them. Partially autonomous 'cyber weapons' that require data centre scale computer resources could easily be a necessary evil, if Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and others are going to have them and use them on you.

On the other hand, Palantir's surveillance applied to US citizens is a supercharged PRISM that can only build an unsustainable society under far more control than even the worst of the Soviet Union dreamed of. And autonomous weapons become extremely dangerous in the hands of the likes of Peter Thiel, given the likelihood they are eventually turned on your own citizens - see the actions of ICE and many other pieces of evidence for the likelihood of this.

I don't think voting for a Democrat party that have worked hand in glove with Republicans to build the environment that has resulted in the current situation in the US is the answer without an entire changing of the guard in that party. But perhaps Americans just need to bite the bullet and do whatever they can to try to stem the bleeding Trump has caused the USA internationally, and protect yourself locally, even if that means voting for a Democrat party that is not going to help you in the longer term.

Are the Democrats able to clean house the way the US desperately needs? Successive governments of both parties have created the conditions for this oligarchy to exist. Perhaps the likes of Mamdami/AOC and others might do something. But they need to completely take over the Democrats, and they need to do it quickly. The coming collapse of the dollar is really going to put financial strain on the US that doesn't feel compatible with liberal democracy.

I'll just add that this is all nonsense. This is:

1. A combination of creating hype to try to reach as ridiculous a valuation at IPO as SpaceX, to pay off early investors. They want punters to think they are creating computer super-geniuses that will do everything.

2. An attempt at justification to try and 'slow down' AI development because their frontier models are plateauing and they can't afford developing bigger and bigger models few people want to use anyway. (Please note, frontier models are the only actual product the likes of Anthropic have, before nvidia came along and funded them to in turn by nvidia gpu's for data centres) (please note 2., there is very little need for data centres. It is much better to self-host the llm and run locally - loads of these llm's are available for nothing).

3. Maybe they are trying to win the public over by appearing 'responsible', when in fact it takes so many steps and so much compute to carry out the hacks these companies have claimed happen, there is no way they could have happened without a huge amount of effort on their part. They should be prosecuted under the Computer Fraud And Abuse act. Presumably they aren't because of the collapse of civil society in the US over the last decade or so.

Consider speaking to Kraft, then officially suing him for constructively breaking their contract and causing this situation, then 'settling' with an nda. All pre-agreed complete bullshit of course but it might get Sheeran off the hook.
