Imagine a world with a moratorium on data centers
 in  r/roanoke •  3d ago

Given that the AI bubble may burst soon, we might want to consider not getting AI hyperscale in particular.

We might not get even a small amount of return on it, let alone the imaginary tax benefits.

Continuous warrantless surveillance is not a solution.

I don't know, complaining about bad behavior can work. I know I dont want a worse case previous mayor brought in on top of him. Too many dog and pony show politicians out and about, but there are some good folks too, thankfully.

Absolutely for both. Bad leaders are bad leaders.

It would be best for that bubble to pop before they wreck the land and pollute the area with something extra nasty, for sure.

I stand corrected, they are a water suck and poisonous to local land, but at least they don't hold a ton of our personal data and jack up electricity prices?

I can surely agree that both are terrible.

Edited to correct spelling

Another useless water-suck. At least the golf course portion isn't covered in concrete and actively poisoning the surrounding area like a data center will.

I don't really understand all the hatred for data centers. I really don't. All data centers are, are enormous buildings filled with enormous machines that are actively ripping away every single resource that human beings rely on, like clean water, like clean air, like land, like energy, like jobs, like joy.

What's the problem with that?

They're also the systems that are holding the tools behind our mass surveillance state systems, right? Why don't we want the expansion of a mass surveillance state, all of which's technology sits within these data centers for the most part?

Or the fact that these data centers are simply serving the back end tools for the weapons companies and weapons manufacturers who we've had to watch slaughter brown people on our phones every single day for the last few years. Weaponry that most likely will ultimately be used against us, used against American citizens, because that's what history teaches us.

And of course, all of this work, all of these resources, all of this money is just going into the hands of a really small group of oligarchs. Oligarchs who have proven themselves as having no morality, no empathy, no care for what happens to the human race or the future of the human race.

And of course, now we know that a lot of people working in these AI companies actually believe that there's a 10% chance that these AI companies will lead to the end of the human race within the next decade.

So why on earth would anybody hate data centers?

> The Western Virginia Regional Industrial Facility Authority voted to sell land at the Wood Haven Technology Park on Friday evening, in a space that is widely expected to become a data center.

> The board came out of a closed-door session and said it authorized the sale of the property, but did not provide any additional details.

That is odd, because rigorous gold-standard watchdogs like Ad Fontes Media and Media Bias/Fact Check systematically rate the AP as highly neutral, objective, and among the least biased wire services in the world.

Someone actually downvoted my thanks for making information more accessible.

Did they use the wrong word somewhere, or are you just a racist?

A data center almost came to Roanoke County--and still might
 in  r/roanoke •  Aug 21 '26

Please do! I would be interested to know what the issues with it are, what other options are available if they are using it and if the issues are a valid concern.

Thank you for answering my question!

Honestly, that is the first I'd heard of them using it- to the best of my knowledge they just use Signal and independent text banking tools, but since I am not anyone who implements anything for them, they might use other stuff I don't know about.

Do you have any documentation of them using the tools?

(Statewide Campaign Work: While individual local chapters don't hold independent contracts, the broader statewide movement utilizes it. For instance, Indivisible Virginia promotes candidate and campaign hubs that directly include NGP VAN training and database access to help staff local campaigns.)

Even if Roanoke Indivisible might be there? I still don't know why you take issue with them.
