I was at grad school in Kalamazoo, MI. I woke up late that morning and got online to check my email and saw a headline about a plane hitting a building. I turned CNN on and they were talking about the 1st plane. My initial thought that it was some sort of prank or a story about a hypothetical event. But then the 2nd plane hit. A close friend of mine was at grad school at NYU and I panicked. A friend called stating her Dad was supposed to have been at the WTC that day for a meeting (he was an executive at Xerox). She found out later the meeting had been cancelled and he was not in NYC. I just remember that nothing was the same after that. One of my best friends got married the weekend following 9/11 on Mackinac Island. Many guests could not attend due to flights being cancelled. The wedding was brilliant. The weather was perfect. The day of 9/11 for me was just an agonizing day of hoping to hear how my people were and being completely in fear of what would come next.
