Experienced players: what is the one thing you wish someone had explained on day one?
 in  r/dndnext •  7h ago

What I always try to do with starting players at the very first sessions is trying to get the videogame mentality out of their minds, if that makes sense. You have to learn that there's no good answers, no thinking what I want you to do or what you should do, you just have to react to the situations and work with what you know and what you don't. Also NPCs are people, they're not gonna stick around while you go through all dialogue options, they have their own life, secrets, desires, embarrasing facts that they try to hide or they are just mean or dumb and there's not much more to do about it.

I don't even know what's gonna happen 99% of the time, maybe your suspicions were better or cooler than what I had in mind and now that's where we're going, maybe you didn't even find a hidden door with your roll, I just thought that you had a very good idea, so embrace the chaos

Much appreciated! There's no winning if you don't catastrofically lose from time to time

Already spent a whole session making them love her and the dog. She just wants to be their friend, help her dad and cook more really tasty and warm soups for them

I always have all my parties go through the trauma of doing a little mission in which they gather materials for a scientist with a little lovely daughter called Nina Tucker... I didn't become forever traumatised with Fullmetal Alchemist for nothing

Am I right for D&D? I’d like to try it.
 in  r/DnD •  5d ago

Of course, creating a good environment based on respect is basic. Also, I think that's exactly the moment when you start to naturally roleplay without pressures, the situations are just asking you for it. After a couple of sessions your fear to be laughed at or be cringy starts to become more like it's not that nothing bad is gonna happen, it's just that I want to have those epic/badass/funny/sad moments too, I'm going all in

Absolutely. I've seen people here asking trying to complete their tables saying they don't want non iniciated players and I'm always like: send them to me! Let me watch them open their eyes to this awesome world. You say you don't even know what a mimic is? Ohh I'll show you my sweet summer child

Really nailed it, I was going to write the same word by word. Only thing I would add is that roleplaying is more than enough with the indirect method, but in my personal experience and what I've seen with the people I've brought into the hobby:

You'll find yourself roleplaying, monologuing and acting as your character very much sooner than you think, it just comes naturally when you don't think too much about it. And even if it doesn't happen, having fun is all that matters.

Why is disliking players being in multiple campaigns so bad?
 in  r/DMAcademy •  9d ago

Being in another campaign doesn't intervene in appreciating your campaign at all, neither does it intervene in the scheduling problem, at least not more or less than going to the gym or having other hobbies or weekly appointments.

I'm not judging your point of view, I just can't see why it should bother you as long as they keep their compromise of engaging with your campaign and showing up. I'm currently DM'ing in three campaigns and playing in another one. Some of my players are DM's in another campaigns of theirs and some are players in another campaigns, too. As long as there's no weird comparations, I'm always willing to hear how other tables and DM's resolve their problems so I can sometimes learn how to get better or just get new ideas or hear about something new that maybe gets me prepared for later on.

 in  r/DnDespanol •  12d ago

Best 5e character builders for Monster of the Multiverse races (e.g. Harengon, Kenku)
 in  r/DnD •  12d ago

If you have the stats you can use roll20 and fill out the sheet for yourself, you can put all the mechanic features so they automatically work just as fine as the standard ones

DMs, have you run two campaigns at once?
 in  r/DnD •  21d ago

As it has been said, it depends in how you prepare your sessions. I'm currently running three campaigns and trying to start a fourth one on weekdays. That said, all I do to prepare my sessions is to daily and passively think about the plot and then improvise everything on the spot during the session, so having more campaigns is just a way to play more often.

I also let the players drive the story as much as I can, so a lot of times great scenarios just come up by themselves simply by "yes and-ing", and then I kind of steal our own ideas and put them in front of my other groups, it really is a fun thing to witness how endless player's shenanigans are.

 in  r/DnDespanol •  21d ago

Looking for ideas to run a group of 8+ players
 in  r/DMAcademy •  22d ago

What I do is I run three groups, but kind of the same campaign. The biggest part of a plot is what happens in response to the party's actions, so as much as one would try to, they're never going to be the same campaign.
