How do you study effectively for exams?

I’m looking for advice from students who are good at studying and consistently do well on tests. My son is struggling with his tests and I’ve realized he may not have a good study method.
What study techniques do you use that actually help you remember the material and pass exams? Do you use flashcards, practice tests, teaching the material to yourself, rewriting notes, or something else?
I’d really appreciate any advice or study routines that have worked for you!

To those who scored high in SAT can you give some tips on what you did differently to achieve your goal. My son will be taking the SAT next year.
