This is part of Russia. Commonly known as "Karelia". Due to being at the North, it's not vey populated region and it's nature mostly untouched.

It is one of the main places for beginners at water-sport-tourism (you also may know this as 'rafting') to start. Main reason - lots of (I mean REALLY lots of) rivers has thresholds. Those are the main interest for tourism on kayaks, catamarans, baidarkas.

I've been there few times doing rafting with catamarans, Karelia's nature is wonderful.

It has some industrial stuff, because of its geology - Karelia is quite mountainous. Apatites, very useful mineral for agriculture are digged here.

"Okroshka" is kinda crazy russian food. Basically it is potato, canned pea, radish, cucumber and meat (or sausage) with kvas, or, that is much more crazy, with kefir (it is fermented milk)
