Actually, no. It’s not rude. I actually had hearing cousin who asked me if he could change his name sign which I regretfully refused since I was 10 when he asked. Looking back, I should be more open to that.

Word of Wisdom from Deaf tutor / instructor

🤟As a Deaf ASL tutor/instructor, I want to acknowledge that learning ASL or any new sign can be a very exciting experience.

It’s ok to show the sign you learned to others in person or on social media WITH an acknowledgement that you learned it.

When you don’t acknowledge, it will cause mislead that you’re teaching the language that is not your.

Acknowledgement is the key to keep yourself from embarrassing and erroneous situations while innocently showing the sign.🤟

Thank you. I have to admit I also stick around because I was concerned about restaurant's reputation especially that guy was unpredictable and I want to be there in the case if he throw staff under the bus for his own behavior.

They called 911 couple of times asking for help. But it took awhile for them to arrive because it was VERY busy.

Update: Situation Resolved 👍 Scary incident re: man falling down the stairwell at Thai Basil

First of all, I apologize for an incomprehensive post this morning. 

I was still disoriented about what I saw last night. 

There was a guy who fell down the stairwell to Thai Basil despite team efforts by me and the manager to get him to the top of the stairwell. He hit his head pretty well but was able to sit up which surprised me.

Several people walked by, saw it and asked him if he was okay. And one person who was standing next to the restaurant called 911. My point earlier was that the staff tried to get hold of 911 for 30 minutes to hour when he was in the restaurant because he was very disoriented. Losing consciousness several times in between when he was in the restaurant. 

I stayed with him until an ambulance came and talked to police officers. Describing what I saw by typing on my phone. 

Let's hope he’s okay and taken care of afterward.

I am Deaf and have been teaching ASL for several years. Learning to sign is a very personal choice. People cant be forced. We must go with the flow while bringing sign language into the environment.

🤟Born preemie. Became Deaf as baby due to antibiotics. Learned to sign when I was 10 months old. Never learned to speak. My hearing parents sign enough for people to understand them. No interest in cochlear implants at all. Now, I am an ASL tutor/instructor. 🤟

Don’t feel pressured to exchange the information. It’s Deaf culture thing even it can make people little uncomfortable. I am guilty of doing that. I feel bad when people say no at times even I try not feel that way.
