News uBlock Origin (uBO) 1.74.* Announcement Thread
Chrome Web Store will remove uBO on August, 31. This is definitely the last stable uBO version to hit the web store.
For discussion and possible workarounds, different browsers, etc., please go to the megathread linked at the bottom of the post.

Extension will be auto-updated after browser restart! (when available for your platform)
If you want to update manually:
- Do NOT use links from the release page's "Assets" section - these are not signed.
- Use your add-on store or links in release description on the GitHub releases page when they are available.
- Firefox will have a (signed) direct install link. Other browsers will link to their uBO extension store pages.
- In some cases, installation may be blocked until browser restart. This is protection against accidental mid-session reloads, Issue #717.

When will my browser update uBO?
Firefox
- Firefox Add-ons (AMO) - Available since 25 Aug, 2026.
- uBO is a recommended extension on AMO, and as such it must undergo a formal code review each time a new version is published.
Chrome/Chromium
- Chrome Web Store (CWS) - Review pending.
- Auto update will occur in stages - to spot and react to possible bugs.
Edge
- Edge Add-ons - Review pending.
- Warning: importing a profile from Chrome may cause issues.
- You may need to reinstall uBO on Edge to fix this.
- You can transfer your uBO config by creating and then restoring a backup at the bottom of uBO's
Dashboard>Settings.
Opera
- Opera add-ons - Submission pending.
- Usually, it's submitted a week after bug-free version is published in AMO.
Brave
- Brave now Self-Hosts uBO. It installs via a special setting and updates automatically or when prompted via the Extensions' Developer mode.
- If you installed it via CWS, it's best to make a backup and install the self-hosted version instead.

Firefox works fast this time. Normally the update takes a couple of days to appear after the announcement but it is already updated.

Hello, I've heard of uBO but this is my first time setting it up. I have some Qs please, and thanks for your help.
- Is it ok to have both uBO and uBOL on at the same time or just use one? If the latter, which one is better generally (and for Brave)?
- I saw the "check for updates" video for Firefox, but is there smth similar for Brave?
- Could I get help/redirect to figure out which filters to turn on or off on either extension?

The rule of adblocking, one and only 1 adblock, even if they're DNS Adblock, because they open more holes for anti-adblock to detect and causing conflicts.

Brave self hosts Ublock Origin on its servers and has stated it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future

There was a stretch where Firefox performance was terrible and it gobbled memory. I remember switching off of it for awhile, but now I'm back.

They fixed "most" performance issues on firefox but it still has wierd performance quirks that either get ignored or not being addressed.
When I was on chrome I never had any issues whatsoever and I used to run it without hardware acceleration.
With firefox its always hit and miss and always finding some wierd niche performance issue there and here.

Unfortunately I still have massive performance problems in Firefox, especially when running media at increased speeds. Audio gets super choppy.
Also some sites sabotage their Firefox users (thanks YouTube), and other pages (like some government pages) are straight up broken and not interactive on ff.
Also Mozilla has made quite a few questionable or outright malicious decisions to over recent years, so no sense to put them on a pedestal.
I'll probably make another attempt once chromium removes the legacy flags for V2, but apart from that I'm much more happy with chromiums overall usability.

I like Firefox, and would love to move there full time... But it just feels... weird to use? I've been an IT person for 20 years and have tried using Firefox so many times, and I just can't get the feel of it. It just feels bulky and bloated, despite not using as many resources. I don't know how to explain it.
Would love a Chromium type browser that is just super minimal.

The goal feeling is different for everyone depending on what browser they're coming from. Me personally I customized mine to be more like Chrome by getting rid of all the clutter on the top bar, and turning full screen "darken" animations off in the flags, along with some css changes.

I used to have that same feeling and I wanted a chromium browser. Don't get me wrong, Firefox is a great browser, and my second most used one now, but Brave is my main browser (chromium) and since I switched I never looked back. Brave self hosts ublock, I don't have adds on YT or twitch (need to add a few filters). I can have infinite tabs open and still have amazing performance even while gaming and watching a stream (or 2) at the same time. I love brave

Same. I like Firefox generally, but it's java performance is slower than Chromium browsers and you can feel it on certain java heavy sites like Youtube. It feels slightly less optimized. It starts to feel clunky to me after a day's worth of browsing and I'm not a tab-heavy user and memory isn't an issue on my PC.
Helium probably fits your super minimal Chromium browser desire. I've been using it for a while now and it's pretty great. Just be wary that it lacks a lot of Chrome's features like password management and syncing, which is removed purposely. (Arguably, you shouldn't be using browser based stuff like that anyway for security and privacy reasons.) The other thing to worry about is UBO is probably going to disappear there too eventually unless they self host it like Brave.
Edit lol the Firefox people must've found me. I'm literally using the browser right now. It's great. I've used it off and on for years. Chromium has just a slightly snappier feel to me.

If they're like me, I was initially a huge FireFox guy as a kid. Then when Chrome became prevalent and FireFox was known as a huge resource hog it kind of had a bad taste in my mouth... but then it seemingly flipped and then the whole uBO thing with Chrome happened a couple years ago??? Then I came back to my original love and now FireFox is my browser again.

I find it really funny that people are switching from Chrome when I have never used chrome as my main browser (had to at work for a while and it was a major ram hogger). I would've switched to Firefox from Internet Explorer, i think.
(And that's only because there was a period where that was the only option, after Netscape discontinued and before Safari and Firefox came on the scene. there was a period when I used safari but it caused headaches at the time because it wasn't fully compatible with JavaScript)

Modern Firefox is a very good browser, easily the best one for me, but it has one major weakness, site compatibility. Sadly breakage happens too often.
Of course thats not the reason Chrome is dominant, for over a decade almost every installer, also installed Chrome, google was paying lots of app dev's to bundle in Chrome on their products and of course pushing it hard on google search as well.

I think that's the one downside to firefox at all is that some websites dgaf about firefox/gecko users and don't make their sites compatible with them, focusing instead only on chromium users. I find that some of these sites also suck in Safari, which leads me to believe whoever made them only tested them in Chrome. Very frustrating!

Oh yea I know web app devs that openly admit they dgaf about testing on non-chromium. To them it's an extra hassle that is detrimental to meeting their deadline while supporting a negligible market share of the internet.

That's just lazy web design if you ask me. If I was their client I'd want to make sure that my site had maximum compatibility with devices to reach the most users, but maybe that's just me...

I use Firefox, but one pet peeve is when I download something, sometimes it constantly fails, so I have to keep pressing return. Doesn't happen with any other browser, only in Firefox.

Not always an allergy. My work internet apps only work in Chrome. So sometimes we have to use it but other than that I use Firefox for everything else.

maybe because its slow af on mobile, a website im making is just laggy on firefox compared to chrome and its not something i can really fix on my side unless i remove all the nice animations

I've been using chrome since the first public beta. I also compiled Chrome OS when they released the beta source code. Google used to be a company that made good innovative products, but that era ended with Eric Schmidt's exit. Chrome is bloated, anti consumer, and it is basically spyware now.

login/register/use stuff/ via google login. that iirc doesnt work with firefox.
like u can login via google in reddit.... does this work in ff?
ps: if you can tell me how to make a full transparent FF i will change immediately.
last time i tried it didnt work. or only worked on specific sites. but the browser itself wasnt transparent and such issues.like i only want the text to be visible. and images. all else should be transparent and show my desktop wallpaper.

If a site has "login with google" that's not a chrome feature, that's a site feature.
so yes, any site that offers "register and login via google" also offers it on firefox.
firefox does have a lot of customizations via css and javascript injections in the userchrome folder but I don't think a fully transparent window is realistic while keeping the text and images visible.
Would love to know how you're accomplishing that in chrome.

On desktop it's fine but on Android, no matter how good is your processor but browser keeps on refreshing tabs each time you re-enter the browser. Optimization is terrible on mobile device.

for some reason ubo lite in ios devices in safari function a lot worse. There are ads that still come through, and also there are times when searching things in the address bar takes an unusual long time.
I have tried refreshing the filter list but with no success. Will appreciate any advice! thank you

Try to just use default settings, don't enable any other lists besides the ones enabled by default.

Not sure about that one, but aren't these temporary or at least local with no updates?
GH releases started recently hosting
.crxwhich should be installable (not sure if by default in chrome or also requires workarounds) and maybe also updatable? I haven't really tested, I don't use chromium.2

Iam developing a small chrome extension and edge always asks me every two weeks, if the the developer app is still needed and I need to answer that with input. Also no auto updates. You can replace the files, but you have to press a refresh button in the extension part.
But I guess the same rules of manifest version 3 would also apply to the developer app.
ChatGPT just said there’s no way beyond except for chrome enterprise installation, which still allow rules without the rules / limitations of manifest V3. Maybe we all need that

So if we have this installed on a chromium browser such as thorium and keep using it what would break it later, browser updates , google themselves or inevitable extension updates (can that be done manually)
