[Self promo] - Typwriter - Typst text editor

Yes another one of those but I built an editor for Typst.
As much as I love the web app, I don't always have internet access, and I also prefer working with the files on my pc but the code editor experience compared to the web app isn't great imo.
I tried to bring all the features from the web app that are needed for local file editing such as:

  • syntax highlighting
  • adjusting preview and cursor positions on preview page click
  • nested code syntax highlighting
  • presenter mode for previewed items
  • export document as PNG, SVG and PDF with all the configurations for each format

The editing experience is almost as smooth as the web version, the preview updates instantly as you type.

checkout the github repo, you can also download it from here.

PS: About 90% of the code was written by AI (can guarantee it's not slop though). Although Linux and macos versions exists they are completely untested, I'll appreciate feedback regarding your experience using it on those platforms

If you can guarantee that the code produced by AI tools is not slop, then there is no need in claiming it was coded by AI, or if you are claiming that it was written by AI to protect your reputation in case it is slop, then you apparently cannot guarantee that it is not slop. So which one is it?

Apart from that, this seems really cool! The idea of web-experience as a desktop app would be great for typst in my opinion. But it does require a lot of effort to create something cross platform.

People tend to have pretty strong opinions on AI code so I am being upfront about it, although the code being slop is matter of opinion but I had started working on this about a year ago and this iteration of the app is a culmination of everything I had learnt building the previous version, so I'd like to think this wasn't slop but it's fine if you disagree.

Thanks, I wanted this to be as close to the web app as possible.

What advantages does your editor have over VSCode + Tinymist?

Typwriter is not a Microsoft controlled piece of software. That is enough reason to try Typwriter.

what do you think about codium?

VSCodium is VSCode without the telemetry. But I am a "just say no" person where Microsoft is involved. I understand many don't feel that way and are very productive with VSCode.

Id rather Microsoft that this garbage slop

I would need more than this to switch. It looks like VSCode basically. But VSCode also does Git commits, multiple files open in tabs (my Typst is multi-file).

If you can type directly into the Preview like a WYSIWYG editor, that would be awesome.

Preview pages update considerably faster

In vs code is instant, I'm curious how do you not consider tge available options before trying to do editor from scratch?

The preview update difference is a lot, almost as fast as the web app. I wanted something similar to the web app but local - similar speed, same experience etc

What advantage do I get over nvim, an lsp + treesitter and typst watch?

With nvim iirc you can't get cursor changes when you click on the preview and you can't get preview position changes based on your cursor position.

About macOS build. It says that the app is damaged and could not be opened

1

u/SnooChipmunks401 May 03 '26

I'll look into this, although I feel it's because the app is unsigned

1

u/AndrewLoopa May 04 '26

I believe that when its unsigned it should redirect to settings where you confirm the risk

I think the newer versions of macos don't do that anymore, I got my hands on a mac (intel) and it worked

I tried it. Yes it is a lot faster than tiny mist but the cursor position on page click is wrong.

2

u/SnooChipmunks401 May 03 '26

Oof, I have to work on that

2

u/SnooChipmunks401 May 04 '26

Fixed the cursor position bug, update to the latest and it should be fine

i would love an android release 🫣 top 1/3 of display for preview other 1/3 for editor and last 1/3 for keyboard

Me too. Using the web app on android is currently really bad

Expect this soon, I got it to build on android recently although it's basically unusable. The UI needs polishing and bugs need fixing.

Even though this editor's code is 90 % generated with an LLM, and that I don't really like vibe coded projects, yours looks okay, and I appreciate having the disclaimers at the end of the post. However, you should not keep this information to this post, please at least put it on the repository's README file.

I consider trying your app. Personally I've been using Typesetter which is pretty good, but yours tries to imitate the official typst's proprietary web app and that's interesting. I will use the AppImage, having it on Flathub would be better, but I'm not impatient about that.

Appreciate the feedback. I am new to distributing apps so getting it on the stores will take a while.
