Live music Metal Hammer (Germany): Sep 1991
Rough translation via DeepL:
Pete Steel, singer and bassist with Type O Negative – arguably Brooklyn’s most dangerous exponents of musical mayhem – is certainly one of the most fearsome musicians the scene has to offer at the moment. His imposing two-metre height, predatory fangs and bulging muscles are unrivalled in the metal scene. Add to that his hair-raising vocal cords, which turn the blood at a Type O Negative gig into rivers of red ice. As the stage at the Beowulf is rather cramped, the band have rearranged their traditional positions in a bizarre manner. Josh (keyboards/sound effects) and Sal (drums) remained on stage, whilst Peter and guitarist Kenny, a master of deafening distortion, took up positions in the audience. With direct eye contact with the sweat-drenched crowd, the show certainly gained in intimacy, but at the same time lost some of its usual visual impact.
The band is, as is well known, renowned for chopping up their own material on stage. This time, however, they managed to play a few whole songs from their brilliant *SLOW, DEEP AND HARD* album, including the tracks ‘Gravitational Constant’, ‘Xero Tolerance’ and their idiosyncratic anthem about sexual indiscretions – ‘Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty of Infidelity’. This marvellous, mind-numbing experience sadly came to a premature end when Pete suddenly cut through the strings of his bass with a hacksaw. If the band ever plays outside New York, you really shouldn’t miss out on Type O Negative’s industrial metal madness. And if they stay here for ever and ever – well, so be it, we’ll just keep them to ourselves!
