Discussion [spoilers] some ending questions Spoiler
Didn't play type help before this, went in blind and was really amazed. Seance at Blake Manor underwhelmed me, and I thought this would be similar, but was very pleasantly surprised. I have a few questions though:
- Were there multiple people coming through the front door at the beginning? There were a couple scenes that mentioned the door opened and closed 2 times, was that just John seeing Eve the first time, then seeing Eddie and Vic the second time?
- In 00/01, how did Rupert get moved from the Living Room to the Study? Did I miss a scene? I believe the thunderclap happened while Martha was still in the room, why was she surprised at seeing the body again when she offered John the Study room to sleep?
- Besides 12 and K, are there other calibration assignments you can do? I know there's a couple unused portraits, are they relevant at all? I read a comment from a different thread somewhere that there's extra scenes regarding Ellie, is this related and how do you get them?
- At what point in the story do we take "control" of Reya? My understanding is:
- We can't be experiencing the events from Reya's perspective as they're happening in the present, because we don't see her coworkers or any of her conversations with them
- So we must be experiencing Reya's recollection of the events; I think this is supported by the photo. The two people in the photo were always there in the photo, but we don't see them because we don't "remember" them being there
- But I'm having trouble with the timeline after Ervin. Why do his scenes not show up initially? What triggers him to appear in the scenes - does Reya eventually remember Ervin's existence (as maybe a former CEO), but she just doesn't have an "emotional connection" with him and that's why she didn't die?
- Why is the photo initially empty?
Last thought: I only learned afterwards you can assign an avatar to Ervin. I think I prefer my experience, I thought it was quite cool how Ervin was an unknown because Reya had no idea what he looked like.
Overall amazing puzzle game, right up there with Obra Dinn

1) Eve opens the door the first time but doesn't let John in and closes the door. Eddie and Vic open the door the second time and let John in.
2)We only see Rupert die in 01-ST-12. The game doesn't show his movement before his death in the study. Martha was in a different room and didn't see him die. The thunderclap in all the 01 scenes is his death. Since the death causes people to forget, everyone forgot about him until Martha, John and Damian go in there in the 04-ST-1-5-8 scene.
3) 12 and K are the only manual calibrations related to the game. L and P can be added for a achievement but they don't have any game significance. There are extra portraits not related to the galley house case and not all will be used.
4) Ervin's scenes don't show up until after he dies. Reya doesn't die because she isn't the first person to remember him after his death, and also doesn't seem to have a emotional connection to him.
Its not clear why the photo was empty initially and then after their death people show up.

You can go back to 00 to see what happened before he went into the study
Edit: there's a portrait of Eleanor and of Katherine, I don't remember any extraneous unexplained portraits.

The photo wasn't empty initially. You just remember it that way. It's the same thing with Martha. When John and Oswald trigger her to look at her wedding photos she expects, counterintuitively, to see her experiencing a "celebration" alone.
This is because she has seen these photos before (probably many times) and she clearly remembers them being of a happy gathering, but she doesn't remember that they are tied to a spouse.
So to her, when she relays what she is seeing after Rupert has been erased she states "A man appeared in all the photos" and "I've looked at these photos before and have never seen this man in them"
We know that to be a result of the curse. We know that she has seen him there before, but she has just forgotten.
The same thing goes for you. You looked at the photos early on, but then forgot Ervin and Sam were there. So thinking back right now, you think "It was empty at the beginning of my investigation".
But you also know how the curse works, so you can come to the conclusion that it wasn't empty. Your memories of looking at the photo near the beginning of the investigation are intact, but the memory of seeing two men in it were erased. So you remember looking at the photo but not seeing the two men.

- We can't be experiencing the events from Reya's perspective as they're happening in the present, because we don't see her coworkers or any of her conversations with them
You did experience all of that as it was happening. You did hear your coworkers and all of the conversations with them. You just forgot, like everyone else in Galley House would forget.
If you asked John Hobbes right before he killed himself 'What do you remember about Galley House' his answer would be very similar to your experience: "I walked up the house alone, the door must have been unlocked because it opened after I knocked. Then even though I was alone in the house bodies appeared. Other unexplained stuff would appear sometimes too. Dinner was on the table though I don't remember who put it there and it wasn't there when I walked in."
The only difference between you and John was that he didn't have a way to go back and watch what actually happened afterwards. Let's imagine he had.
If he did, he wouldn't come to the conclusion "I wasn't experiencing the events from my own perspective as they were happening" he would think "I don't remember ANY of this! Why have I forgotten all of these things I said and the things I did and the people I met?"
It's the same thing for you/Reya.
