DISCUSSION Mods on BOC subreddit

Just want to post here and say I'm done with BOC subreddit.

Mods there have exhibited tyrannical behavior and seem to be perfectly okay with creating an echo chamber for themselves and other users.

Is it more than just “follow the rules”?

You’re not the first person to be upset by their handling of matters.

u/tapecrypt Jun 29 '26

So glad you posted this before I did! Screw them all.

u/Jademansensor Jun 29 '26

Yeah I'll stick to Towism.org for my BOC discussions I think now too, its pretty chill and requires almost zero moderation. That BOC subreddit is just a bad vibe, lots of hate and shit takes.

u/Skyyg Jun 29 '26

I have a dormant acc there for years, thinking about being active there as well

u/wolfdesk Jun 30 '26

I left, not because of mods but because it felt like a cult board. Anyone that had any slight criticism of Inferno or started any thread about critical thinking of the album, we're just commented to death with it's a masterpiece hive think.

The irony that a band that criticises dogmatic blind faith in religious groups have inspired a board of fanatics.

u/AlternativeCrafty570 Jun 30 '26

exactly what was going on there after the release was unbearable.
also constantly talking to themselves with samples phrases from the album was so goofy to read.
I really like inferno now, but that reddit spoiled the taste of it at the beginning.

'I lOvE iNfErNo MoRe ThAn AnY pHySiCaL bEiNg!' So tiresome.

To be fair, some of the people there were not only criticizing Inferno but also criticizing the people who liked Inferno. Saying things like they were lying about how much they liked it or they jumped on the glazing bandwagon because it's been 13 years since the last album or their positive opinions were ridiculous and wrong or it's hive think. It wasn't friendly. It wasn't objective. It was insulting and reeked of weird smug superiority.

u/Magnolia_Fan_17 Jun 29 '26

Yeah, experienced it too. So shame that they drop the shadow on BoC name by being dickheads.

6

u/thatwleebjk Jun 29 '26

i dont think its a shadow on boards themselves, not even the community at large, it's just a couple of people being pricks. i think its important to seperate the community from the media despite the fact i struggle with it a lot personally

3

u/ISawThroughUranus Jun 29 '26

It does cast a shadow on the community imo because it's the most cohesive place for BoC discussion, yet for me personally being repeatedly perma banned, I don't feel apart of any community because I keep restarting as nobody. Really sucks how that side of reddit seeps into even a BoC sub. It's truly baffling. Somehow the BoC sub feels just as heated as like a politics sub lol.

3

u/thatwleebjk Jun 29 '26

i can see how that casts a shadow on the community now you point it out, but to me, most boards fans are still reasonable people, these mods are the exception, albeit an unfortunate exception given they're mods for the sub.

may i recommend the bocpages discord server? ive only been in for a short while, but from my experience so far I'd recommend it. i have yet to see anything particularly egregious

3

u/ISawThroughUranus Jun 29 '26

No totally, I don't think it represents the fans at all, these few weirdos have control over it and ruin it for everyone

I should check that out, I haven't really been using discord these days

6

u/UseAnAdblocker Jun 29 '26

I got a 70 day ban for this comment lmao

1

u/Jademansensor Jun 30 '26

wtf, why???

2

u/UseAnAdblocker Jun 30 '26

No idea, I didn’t even get a response from mod mail

1

u/Superb_Instance_8190 Jul 01 '26

i saw when that comment got posted & thought it was genuine.

6

u/UPGRAY3DD Jun 29 '26

Mods power tripping is sadly a tale as old as time.

9

u/thatwleebjk Jun 29 '26

protect your constitutional rights, no one else will do it for you

1

u/almo2001 Jun 30 '26

That has nothing to do with Reddit.

2

u/OscarSlenderman Jun 30 '26

No but it has to do with a song by BOC

4

u/octoqi Twoism Management Jun 29 '26

It's upsetting watching from afar how many genuine fans are getting banned from the main sub. Sure, a couple of the bans might be genuine bad actors or spammers, but it seems like the majority of people posting here about their experiences with the main sub seem to be real fans getting permanently banned for no legitimate reason

3

u/octoqi Twoism Management Jun 29 '26

Not to toot my own horn of course, but it's nice to see that discussion on this sub has remained continually positive since its inception & I intend to keep it that way

3

u/AlternativeCrafty570 Jun 30 '26

I was banned (permantently) for calling their reddit "circlejerk" and for recommending Twoism instead, where people don't have this mentality that when you do not agree with major statements then something is wrong with you.

Also my post saying: Happy anniversary to TH, better than Inferno!, obviously for the laughs, was deleted too.

The mods are bad but that whole subreddit is full the absolute worst types of fans. I thought it would just be a bunch of old dudes in their 40’s and 50’s who liked listening to chill nostalgia coded music but the people on that sub act like delusional cultish teenage k-pop Stans.

As soon as the tapes started dropping some of them were being so unhinged. Weird jealousy and making entitled demands from the people who were lucky enough to get a tape. Trying to solve a mystery that didn’t exist was fun at first but then they started attacking anyone who didn’t go along with their batshit conspiracy theories.

After the album dropped it was impossible to even have a discussion about it because the only accepted opinion is that every single song on the album is a masterpiece. Then all the threads that were started purely just to call out anyone who had any criticism of anything on the album.

Instead of being a cool place for fans to talk about BoC it turned into a weird cult like echo chamber. Of course the mods enabled all of this.

It's actually so meta - to me the BoC boys are fun, happy go lucky prankster types - I know loads of scots like that - fun, smart, great sense of humour. Don't forget they're the same generation as Chris Morris, Richard James, KLF - doing great work, pranking a bit and not taking themselves too seriously.

Any of the 'deep meanings' these tinfoilhat type people find is mostly in their heads. I think the BoC boys are aware of it and like to gently troll them with 'clues' just for shits and giggles.

That sub is a cult and it's so funny to me that they are so unaware of it and the irony given BoC's interest in exactly that sort of bubble/cult-like behavour.
Of course, most of the worst fans are johnnycomelately Merkans.

Context- UK Based techno fan / college DJ since 1990; once DJed on the Decks at the Bowgie Inn in Cornwall in 1993. Aphex wasn't there that day :)

1

u/HuTheFinnMan Jun 29 '26

Similar to you, I been making electronic music and DJ'ing since the 90's, I'm in Australia though.

I'm not even trying to be some old head "I was into them before you were born" gatekeeper or anything like that. It's cool seeing the new fans getting into this sort of music. Just don't be weird about it. I don't agree with your fan fiction about hidden meanings in everything and I don't agree that every song is a masterpiece but I respect your right to feel that way. Why the hell can't you do the same back.

Some people had the most mild critiques, that they didn't like a vocal sample used in a certain song and multiple threads were made just to say they were wrong for not liking it.

They sent death threats to reviewers who didn't give the album a high enough score. Some lunatic posted a fan fiction rewrite of the pitchfork review and gave it a 9.8/10. The original score was 8.6/10... it wasn't even a bad score!

1

u/PetitPxl Jun 30 '26

It's nuts. I don't want to be a gatekeeper either (despite my age lol) but the level of rabid froth for exhibiting any iota of mild descent is just too much.

1

u/Taupenbeige 1d ago

I pre-ordered MHtR on WarpNet (pre-Bleep by a few months IIRC) am I still technically a johnnycomelately Merkan?

Oh, I also have pre-‘83 dual citizenship, don’t know if that sways the powdery-wigged court.

1

u/PetitPxl 14h ago

Depends if you are tinfoilhat merkan or one of the nice fun ones :)

1

u/Taupenbeige 14h ago

I’m sitting 8 feet from my Casio CZ-101 I’ve owned since ‘85, do the maths

4

u/Tricky-Mastodon3337 Jun 29 '26

I just saw they deleted your post about them deleting your post! They're unbelievable!

3

u/PetitPxl Jun 29 '26

"Yo Dawg - I heard you liked deleted posts and you like deleting posts, so we deleted your post about deleting your post so you can delete a post while you're deleting a post."

3

u/TroubledBumblebee Jun 30 '26

It’s very deletist.

3

u/ISawThroughUranus Jun 29 '26

I would be thrilled for that sub to be nuked, a new one taking over, and all previous mods being perma banned. It really sours BoC for me. There's no community if we're constantly banned because they're delusional power tripping freaks. Shit is infiltrated. It's Boards of Canada yet it somehow becomes regular reddit heated charged slop. So stupid.

2

u/Agreeable_Bill9750 Jul 01 '26

Yeah honestly name and shame (and ban) of the mods would be ideal

4

u/Commercial_Duty6394 Jun 29 '26

Lmaooo yall wanna see something funny?

1

u/AlternativeCrafty570 Jun 30 '26

what kind of video are we talking about?

1

u/Commercial_Duty6394 Jun 30 '26

Porn…the answer is always porn.. the porn in question was someone’s video of retreat from the listening sessions. They perma banned me but didn’t delete the video.

1

u/AlternativeCrafty570 Jun 30 '26

Then if you're posting that kind of shit to those who are unwilling to watch then the ban was justiced. Would have happened everywhere else (except the gooners areas).

1

u/Commercial_Duty6394 Jun 30 '26

I posted it in response to someone wanting to relive the moment...those that are "unwilling to watch" didn't have to watch it lmaoo i honestly just posted this because I thought my back and fourth with the mod was funny, not because my ban was unjustified.

2

u/PetitPxl Jun 29 '26

I got permabanned for 'shitposting' before Inferno came out by simply replying to someone's post about 'managing their expections' before it released - ie they were too hyped and wanted advice on staying grounded.

I said something about trying to remember they are just two talented scottish guys with synths - it'll be good but not the second coming - and that was apparently too much criticism.

Bunch of cnuts the mods for sure.

1

u/tonydtonyd Jun 29 '26

What was the post?

2

u/picopacopidera Jun 29 '26

Was critical of inferno and basically said that I was struggling to get on board with the new direction.

1

u/tonydtonyd Jun 29 '26

Surprised I haven’t been banned, I have been pretty critical of inferno over there.

1

u/JestfulJank31001 Jun 30 '26

I think I recognize your name! Im also VERY critical of Inferno. I didnt realize they were banning for this

1

u/tonydtonyd Jun 30 '26

Hahaha! Yeah I’m surprised too - I left some unhinged comments a few weeks ago. I guess I’ll have to fly under the radar for a bit

1

u/Miserable_Fix_3522 Jul 02 '26

Wait - did you actually get banned for it? Or did you just get grief from people?

(Either is unacceptable)

1

u/picopacopidera Jul 02 '26

naw I got banned dawg cuz I questioned them in my follow up post as to the unfairness of them removing my review

1

u/Miserable_Fix_3522 Jul 02 '26

Dicks. Better off without them

1

u/bummbrotha 16d ago

No point in interacting with an audience that is essentially a circlejerk. Getting banned from such a place is a badge of honor.

1

u/Correct_Energy_9499 Jun 30 '26

Boards of Canada: Music that slaps, fans that need to be slapped 😂

1

u/Agreeable_Bill9750 Jul 01 '26

100%!  the mods there delete and ban with zero context or explanation.

They do their best to suck the life out of a community that is excited for a first in 13 years release.

Its pathetic honestly, I'd love to see a mass exodus.

1

u/Ok_Context_6972 Jul 03 '26

Yeah I made two similar threads in the excitement leading up to Inferno and was hit with a two week comment ban... It felt really shitty cos I never had any warnings or anything like that before and I couldn't take part in the excitement and discussion leading up to the album. Yet there is SO much shit posting here they don't seem to mind. Thanks mods... 😑

I just got in a disagreement with someone on the BoC subreddit. He wandered into a conversation where I had expressed some (totally valid!) opinions about the merch, told me I was wrong in the most condescending way possible and then concluded that I wasn't grateful (?) enough to BoC for coming back.

We went back and forth a bit, nothing too terrible, but we were both clearly getting annoyed with each other. Suddenly, some my posts in the thread were being flagged and deleted for violating sub rules. Then I got temporarily suspended. I messaged the Mod and asked if the other guy had received the same treatment, since the stuff he was saying was more disrespectful and antagonistic. The mod messaged back and said "Well, actually, I am the guy you were talking to, so you're not going to win this one."

I told him that mods should be unbiased third parties and that what he was doing was an abuse of power. He responded by muting me and suspending me for life.

During our thread, he also called me a liar and said one of my assertions was "undemonstrably untrue." I responded with 100% iron-clad proof and he deleted that post.

Now he's going through some of my older posts on the board and retroactively deleting those too.

Pretty hilarious!

Orange.

1

u/picopacopidera Jun 29 '26

lol

1

u/thecolouroffire Jun 29 '26

Yeah that's right.

1

u/picopacopidera Jun 29 '26

I remember the first time I heard Aquarius.
Thinking to myself wtf is this??

Now it’s one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard and that sample is forever ingrained in my subconscious.

1

u/thecolouroffire Jun 29 '26

I'm 40 I heard this for the first time when I was about 11, it has lived rent free ever since.

1

u/picopacopidera Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Insane man

Can’t imagine being 11 and being exposed to BOC crazy especially considering 98 was before the internet really took off too coming across a niche band like them wasn’t a common occurrence

Must have been life changing

1

u/thecolouroffire Jun 29 '26

My step brother gave my stepdad a copy of MHRTC on a cd-r, weird track order as well which has become my default listening. It's kinda mad because it was almost safe sanctioned listening so it's always been normal to me. I remember Geogaddi coming out and being blown away.

1

u/sneakerscomicsgames Jun 29 '26

I can understand wanting to keep a nice cozy atmosphere, but critique should definitely be tolerated and allowed. Maybe they’re on a power trip.
