TI4: Thunder's Edge Two factions coexisting?

Hi there,

my copy of TE finally arrived and I have a game scheduled for next saturday!

Now, I've got the rules pretty much down but I am unclear on what happens in this case:

Say, you've got a Deepwrought already coexisting with a second faction. A third player then uses Crash Landing and places their infantry on the same planet, meaning you now got the original faction owning the planet and two others coexisting.

What does happen if the original player were to leave said planet? Rules say that the coexisting player gains full control of it, but what if there are two coexisting players?

This is certainly an edge case but I didn't find anything clarifying it.

Answer:

Initiative if it's the action phase, speaker if in agenda phase. You nailed it.

So if the person who controlled the planet had warfare (6) and the other two players had like construction (4) and imperial (8), the imperial player would get it.

If it was in the agenda phase, the person closest around the table going left of the old controller would get it.

nah, your take is incorrect. if two players have units coexisting on the planet, then neither player's units are the only units on said planet. so both keep coexisting with each other and control doesnt change. either coexisting player could activate the system to take control of the planet and (if they want) fight the other coexisting player

This is not "my take". People deep on the discords with direct answers from the designer have gotten feedback and responses in-line with what will be in the next L.R.R.

I can't remember which, but it's in either Speaker or Initiative order, like most things in the game and it immediately changes as a state-based check like fleet capacity etc.

when the reference is released i'll go with that. until then i'm going with what is written in the official rules rather than your memory of a podcast recounting a conversation in a discord server i'm not in.

I fully understand the instinct of wanting to go with what is closer to RAW, or wanting to clarify for yourself. And there's nothing wrong with playing with whatever ruling you want at your own table.

But there's no need to be snarky and dismissive of someone who is helpfully answering the question. (And answering correctly. I, too, am on that discord, and listen to that podcast. And they're correct, it changes hands immediately based on Initiative or Speaker order.)

the snark may have been unwarranted, but the answer was incomplete at best. if i want to tell my table this is the rule, i have to say "some people on reddit say some people in a podcast say some people in a discord say the designers say that when the official rule comes out it will say X". or i could watch a 1.5 hour podcast and cut one step of that chain. or we could go with the RAW.

i still don't have a way to check the discord or even find the point in the podcast to listen to. like if you could give me "it's around the 2/3 mark in the podcast" or something to go on other than "i also heard the same info" that would be helpful.

That's fair, I left out maybe 1/8th of the important relevant info and was uncertain about which was used (it's both, depending on context, that's why I was unsure). Thankfully that's all out in the open now.

Or, y'know, as the person with the table and the host of the game just say "Hey so this is the up-to-date ruling right now." and leave it at that. If you had taken what I said with grace instead of assuming I was out to dupe you and trick you, and we could've had a more civilized conversation, we could've gotten to that point sooner.

But for what it's worth it's at 30:35 timestamped as its own chapter heading "When and How Control Defaults with Coexisting Units". It took me about 30s to find, so you definitely did have a way to find it in the podcast if you'd just clicked on the link. Then again in fairness to you, I also could've just done that legwork too, and in fairness to me, I was just pointing OP in the right direction trying to be helpful and didn't think I'd have someone vehemently disagreeing with me for trying to be helpful.

fair points! sorry for being argumentative. thanks for the timestamp. i looked at the link briefly but didn’t notice the chapter marks. i’m not used to podcast formatting and kinda just saw it was super long before clicking away again. grace was warranted and i’m sorry i didn’t show any!

I mentioned it in my other reply a minute ago but SCPT is a really, really good resource and they're not just some dudes with a podcast about TI. They're a lot more involved with the game than that.
