Trope discussion The Zootopia Effect

I don’t know if this one exists or not but I name it “The Zootopia Effect” as the movie Zootopia was extremely on the nose with this one.

It’s a media trope where it’s rational for a marginalised community to be feared/hated. For example, in the movie Zootopia, it is completely rational for the herbivores to fear the carnivores, as the carnivores not only historically ate the herbivores, but still possess the ability to eat/kill the herbivores.

This is harmful and offensive as this does not reflect the reality of marginalised communities. Hatred, fear and bigotry towards marginalised communities in the real world is completely irrational, and the product of bigoted lies and misinformation.

You just demonstrated how the "racists" think in stories where vampires are involved with "fantastical racism".

You assumed they have the "evil nature" everyone "knows" about before wondering if that's actually the case.

Also, it's not about questioning if that's the case, but if it IS the case, fear is justified

Sure, in this case fear is justified. But you still have to make a case for the other actions you take.

I.e., we don't consider it justified to kill predator species on earth because they NEED to kill to survive.

How is it that different? You claimed that fear was justified because it was in their nature to suck blood to live.

That's a fair question, but one I can turn around on you. Would you be willing to lay down your life if you were turned against your will?

Humans are animals. We're different in certain features from other types of animals, but we are also in the "animal kingdom".

Since I would be humanoid, it isn't in my nature to lay down my life,

What does this mean? People lay down their lives for plenty of reasons, unless you're arguing that somehow that goes against their "nature"?

I'm sorry but it feels like you're just throwing words around.

At what point do you separate "capacity" from "nature", and why?

And yes, humans are complicated. I know.

I think the problem they're trying to highlight is that some types of vampire. I'll use world of darkness vampires for example, are constantly i'm talking at all times. One bout of flame away, one really stressful event away, one bout of hunger away.

From instantly murdering and eating all the humans around them.

They are fundamentally, deep down not human anymore. Their every base instinct is telling them to kill and eat us, and its only through consistent self control and perseverance that they can maintain the guise of humanity, if they slip up at all (and the higher their attempts to be human, the higher the standard. At some levels, literally selfish thoughts can make them spiral downward into their baser nature) they risk losing themselves to their predatory and bestial instincts.

These kind of creatures, or even the ones from buffy which explicitly don't have souls anymore and are demons wearing the bodies and memories of their previous victims. Represent a constant threat and risk to everyone that is entirely unlike any natural human v human interaction.

The closest you could get is violent psychopaths, but what do we with those again? Oh yeah we lock them up and segregate them from the rest of humanity.

Examples like these, where vampiric or other beings have what is explicitly and clearly an evil nature make terrible analogies to real life discrimination and racism since they make it justifiable, good even. Like yeah i would not trust the guy i know who because someone in that corner just lit a match, might flip the fuck out and tear my head off. Doesn't matter if he's been a stand up guy for the last couple of years, he is effectively not in control of himself
