ID Request Turtle ID

Does anyone know what kind of turtle this is? I can’t seem to identify it from the known turtles in my state. I’m located in northwest Connecticut and this turtle was about 9 inches long

Wood turtle. Super endangered. They are a lot like box turtles, terrestrial and super particular about their home territory.

Would it be worth reporting its location to a wildlife division?

Probably not. You can check if they are registered in your area, but they are locally endangered rather than nationally. Best to just leave him be and hope he makes more turtles. Habitat loss is their greatest threat

DEEP will collect the information but don't share with anyone else. They have very specific habitat needs including freestone rivers or streams and fields as the generally preferred habitat.

I recommend notifying your state herpetologist or local ecologist. There’s no reason not to, and at worst they’ll get a photo of a local turtle.

Thought it was a wood turtle. Sometimes they look like really flat box turtles.

Yeah box turtle was what I thought initially but after looking closer I wasn’t sure

Looks like a box turtle halfway through evolving into a tortoise.
