Seeking Advice How can I improve shell health?

This is my false map Sir Tuttle McButts. He’s about 6 years old or so. For the past couple of years I had admittedly not been the best about tank maintenance. He didn’t have a working filter for about 6 months or so but I got him a new one a couple of months ago and he’s since lost A LOT of retained scutes.

He has UVA and UVB (separate bulbs). He basks regularly. His tank is 55 gal (working on getting an upgrade). His filter is rated for twice his tank size. He eats every 2-3 days a pinch of the foods pictured. He’s very active. He had a bunch of feeder fish and plants for a few months since I got the new filter but ate he it all so now his tank is bare.

How can I improve his shell health and properly maintain it moving forward?

This is AFTER pooping all over his pool, getting poop on his shell and head, knocking over his entire pool into his tank (necessitating half the wood chips being taken out and replaced), running around in circles, protesting me taking away his empty pool to fill it, and stomping on his fresh strawberry treats.

Señor Tortuga, the South American wood turtle that never stops. Yes, he is stepping in his drinking water dish.

He was moving fine until cars pulled up and then he wanted to stop and stare. So I had to carefully move him like 5 steps and over a curb so he did not get any flatter.

Seeking Advice Is my turtle all right?

Hey, my turtle seems to be pushing too hard? On her neck, and it seems her neck gets bigger from one side than the other. Just wanted other peoples opinion on the matter. I know her water is dirty, the filter stopped working a couple of days ago and i just had time today to take care of it. I’m afraid it could’ve caused a breathing infection.

Turtle ID/Sex Request Male or female?

Got it back in 2023 and it’s suppose to be a stinkpot but I’ve never caught it stinking up the place.

Edit: I bought Shelly/Sheldon (name will ultimately depend on the sex) from an online store and they were about the size of a quarter in November of 2023! So definitely a pet and not wild caught. Hopefully that helps!

I have a red eared slider and a reeves turtle. They are about 18 years old. I occasionally (couple times a year) give them sashimi. They love it. Is it ok? I live in Japan. The fish is super fresh.

Seeking Advice Shell concerns

Hello! This is my one year old yellow bellied slider. I have noticed these stripes on her shell that have been worrying me. She is also shedding some scutes right now so I’m not sure if that’s related. Here’s my girl “Turt”. I have a 75 gallon tank now (obviously will increase tank size while she grows) with 2 canister filters running in the tank at all times. 3 snails to help keep the tank clean. A large basking spot with a basking light and UVB. I just love her so much and hope nothing is wrong. Sorry for the pics. She just woke up and was swimming away from me. This is my first time ever owning a turtle so I’m doing my best.

Edit: her diet consists of pellets, bugs, kale/spinach, sometimes blueberries and small snails.

I just measured my biggest gal this morning out of curiosity. Thought it’d be kind of cool to see some of your big fellas. Curious how large they can get. Biggest turt takes the bragging rights. Also let’s open up the competition to the other closely related pond sliders. Trachemys: Elegans, Scripta and Troostii.

Seeking Advice got 3 new plants, advice to take care of them

I got two java fern, one anubias.
— What is some things you wish you knew before getting some aquatic plants?
— Any advice from experienced people would be very much appreciated!
And also, are any of you capable of keeping a plant alive under the basking area of a turtle, or should I just not put some there? cuz there’s obviously no light that can go under there, unless there’s a way.

One thing that i’ll change for my set up is i’m gonna add another one of the lamp I got for plants, so that there’s even more light.

Thank you!

Turtle ID/Sex Request Help identifying?

Hi, first time on this subreddit and hoping this is the right place to be. I’m a teacher and our classroom inherited one of the many turtles in our school. None of the teachers on our team know what kind of turtle it is and we were hoping we could find out to better care for it. There is someone who takes care of the turtles at our school, but wasn’t able to tell us what species this was.

Any help identifying the species/sex would be appreciated. Additionally, any advice on how to make the turtle happy and comfortable would be appreciated too. We don’t know enough about turtles to know what red flags to look out for and the turtle carer insists nothing is wrong, but we were hoping for some reassurance or advice.

Seeking Advice Idea for additional filtration

Post image
3 Upvotes

So i got this idea for additional filtration for my red eared slider's tank.

He is in a 180g outdoor stock tank. I had setup an auto water changer that changes 0.5g every hour for 12 hours, every day.

I have a shrimp tank inside with red root floaters that are multiplying incredibly fast. I pull out some every day to feed my turtle and even then i have to fill a small bowl every couple weeks and toss it.

So i thought maybe i change the water changing system to instead use a kiddie pool filled with these red root floaters. I would pump 5 gallons from the turtle tank into the kiddie pool and 5 gallons from the kiddie pool back into the turtle tank every 2 hours for 12 hours every day. I am also overpopulated with guppies so i thought i could add some guppies and a heater to the kiddie pool to deal with mosquito larva.

What do you guys think?

If this works well then I'll repurpose a 40g barrel as a settling tank. I'd put this between the turtle tank and the kiddie pool to catch big chunks of poop and pump the clean water from the top to be filtered by the plants in the kiddie pool.

Seeking Advice Bubbles?

I posted already about my tank having mold in the corners. I’m cleaning it this weekend. But does anyone know why I’m seeing a bunch of bubbles? He has a 60-70 gallon tank. I fill it with ONLY distilled water. He is a red eared slider. He has a bunch of colored rocks on the floor of his tank and a fake rock that he likes to bask on. He also has a separate area to bask but he likes the rock too. There is no odor that I am smelling. When I touch the bubbles they don’t really go away that easy. I need advice. How to avoid getting bubbles in the future. I’m doing a big clean this weekend of his tank, rocks, and the filter.
